 |
|
Does anyone have one of the 6" Kindle's that are going for £69?
Interested in having a ebook reader as my iphone is too small to really get into a book, plus the battery life when running an app means i would be thinking more about how long the battery has left rather than the content.
I would use it to read in downtime at work and in bed.
I saw a few thread Joe posted a while back, just wondering if it's worth 70 quid.
Also can't see if they are backlit at all, can you read in the dark? ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

yea think that's the one i have. wifi only jobby. amazingly easy to read on anywhere. doesn't have a large amount of space but fits more books on than you can read at a time. battery lasts about a month or so i think. rarely charge mine as it's normally in my work bag.
you can download book packs from torrents full of major titles. or new releases are up pretty quick to download.
got mine for christmas and have had way more use than i expected.
also have an ipad and could use that as a kindle but the screen is totally different, kindle is far easier to read from. literally is like reading from paper. they aren't backlit either by the way, was decided against as it would ruin battery life.
tldr- yes worth it, get one if you like reading. ____________________ Sahf East Winnah 4LYF

Thanks for the quick replies, im quite tempted to buy one.
I rarely see sunlight so being able to read in direct light is a meh from me, Nor is the 3g option a major pull, got my iphone for that.
That said met some travelers in Mongolia who had the same kindle as you Joe with the free global wifi, and aparently could send and receive email in the middle of nowhere, which is quite impressive.
I already have a bunch of books on my kindle cloud account (have been using the kindle iphone app), but it's just too small to get into on the phone.
I was reading a few reviews about there being an ad-supported version and a non-ad version, is that in relation to older models?
Also i presume i could connect the kindle to my iphone with tethering? ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

Oh.
When I tried it it didn't work. Was a couple of years ago now though.
Also, this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle/TxGPT17594YQYV
But if you say it works, I believe you! I'll try mine next time I'm abroad. ____________________ Yamaha TDM 850 |

I've used mine all over Europe, Greece, and Cyprus within the last year. 3G works just fine. I use it for BCF, facebook and Email. It is not easy to use the keyboard but great in an emergency. BTW It works fine with google maps if you ever get stuck.
I reckon that I have 200+ books on there at the moment, more than enough space left over.
This is a useful link if you intend to use the browser.

You may have got a kindle keyboard rather than the original 3G with a keyboard. They're the same hardware, but they took away the free 3G on the browser, presumably because it was so popular. I have one of the early ones and have used it on 3 continents in more countries than I can name. It helped no end being able to use google maps when I was lost in the hills outside Pune (India). It's not a good browsing experience but is one hell of a bonus if you really have nothing else.
If you travel a bit and can find one I'd really recommend finding one. I'm not sure you can transfer accounts and still keep the free worldwide free 3G so check that before taking my advice. ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

I got one for the wife, and she read more in her first couple of months with her kindle than she had in the 5 years we'd been together - she is now able to find a comfy position in bed and read rather than have to move every time she turns a page.
She got one for me, and I also rate it highly. I was absolutely gutted when the screen went (it had taken a couple of knocks), because it happened when I was at a really good bit in the book I was reading. Amazon sent out a replacement which arrived the next day - all I had to do was return the broken one. Quality customer service. ____________________ '82 C50, '81 CB100, '84 GS125, '95 NTV650, '00 Bandit 600, '06 SV650, '56 Z1000, '89 NTV600

+1 for calibre.....excellent bit of software
| Shinigami wrote: | i only went for the kobo as it was cheaper than the kindle when i bought it, and was no difference in usability. didn't see the point in a touch screen reader as less things to go wrong and didn't want my greasy finger prints on the screen |
kobo down in price...https://www.whsmith.co.uk/KoboeReaders.aspx
BUT... as good a it is, it's not a kindle...
I got a sony ereader ...does the job well enough, good and robust, but the wifes Kindle just work better.
With all the attendant amazon guff, it is a breeze to use (wife not too tech savvy ) to buy books, has the cloud storage etc...
i know its good, cos she never bothers me with the usual..."Hon, can you fix my ... "
Kindle gets from me...
Tech savvy and willing to do some homework..
Anything but a kindle..(no drm, loads of free stuff out there.. )
Want the straight of the box E-Reader experience..Kindle all the way ...
Thousands of new books, a dedicated store, cheap offers on the latest-ish books ____________________ Previous bikes: Suzuki GT250A / Yamaha DT125 / NTV Honda 650 // currently Suzuki RF900 |
