If you drink tap water read this

Ok, just in case there's anyone else doing the same thing I was doing, let this be a warning to you.

I always fill a glass of water from the upstairs sink using the cold tap.

I thought this was a pretty normal thing to do.

Anyway, I happened to be up in the loft today and out of curiousity lifted the lid on a water tank. It was full of fucking shit, sludge-mank, whatever you want to call it, there were a couple of insects and it also had a pile of loft insulation in the bottom of it.

I thought "that can't be good for the radiators"...

Cut a long story short, it's the fucking cold water tank that I've been DRINKING out of for several years. I proved it by running the tap and it came out of the tank.

Fuck

You're only supposed to take water from the kitchen tap as that is directly connected to the mains.

I won't ever drink from any other tap apart from the kitchen again.

The house was built in the 1930s and who knows what's in that insulation that had dropped in to the tank, I guess I'll just have to see if I develop asbestosis!

All the cold taps in my house are fed from the cold main which is nice if you need a drink of water in the night.
I've found dead birds, rusty bits of metal and all sorts of crap in peoples water tanks, some of the old ones are actually made from asbestos.

most houses will have cold taps only fed from mains, no tank. Its still good to run the tap for a while to make sure its fresh.

Cold water tank usually feeds the hot water tank...? my house anyway. The reson is hot water tank shouldnt be pressurised from mains and its easier to have a seperate tank to fill it... but irrelevant if you have a boiler.

Our kitchen tap is never that cold, I like fridge cold, ie a few degrees C.

Also I used to live in Scunthorpe (they have a massive Tata steel works there and there is loads of mineral shit and crap in the water that leaves permanent water marks on EVERYTHING when it dries) so I got a Brita filter jug to filter all the water before using it. Still got that filter so just fill up from the tap and stick it in the fridge so I got cold (and clean) water when I need it.

This is odd, the water holder in the loft should only go to the hot tap, not the cold as well. You had a boiler fitted recently? If so, they've probably hooked the cold tap up to that.

Anyway, all my taps now feed from the mains, I got rid of the cold tank in the loft when I changed to a combi boiler. Still use the kitchen tap, the bathroom would need running for longer as its been sat in an extra 20 feet of pipe.

At my house I have a borehole that goes down 40 meters into the ground water. It gets pressurised to our water system and is the best water to drink. Normally I wouldn't drink from any tap anywhere else in the Philippines. Here, where I am in Shanghai, no one drinks from the tap, just too dangerous, even the Chinese dont, so that is good enough for me.

All our taps are from the mains and this house was built in 1910 Even used to have the toilet in the back yard back in the mining days.

Personally think tap water is manky tasting, I stick to flavoured water from asda, x4 1 litre bottles for £1.50.

I spent years doing the same (drinking from the upstairs tap), like you, had no idea.. The tank is vile.. it is dirty and has insulation lagging fallen into it.

This is pretty well known stuff.

As said above, most houses in the UK have an indirect cold water system, whereby the kitchen tap is fed directly from the water main, but all other cold water supplies are from the tank(s) in the loft. Water companies (so I'm told) prefer this arrangement as it's less likely to result in fluctuating mains water pressure at times of high demand.

I've never lived in a house or flat where the cold water isn't fed direct from the main Even my gran's many years ago had mains cold water to all cold taps (in a Victorian property too, still had lead pipe throughout though!! lovely )

I hate drinking plain water but I have only one tank in my loft (immersion heater) so Ima go and drink all the tap water from all the taps!

Just went and checked my tank in the loft as i drink from the tap in the bathroom.

Seemed pretty clean too me, though its not one of those old metal tanks from the 1930s.
