Could you glue some plastic onto the foam inserts Rob?

Suspect Wali would create a nice shower of sparks if he were to slide.

Struggling to think what plastic I could use that's lying about....Something about the size of my hand and roughly 3-5mm thick. Thinking A builders bucket...Has a curve to it...bit thin. Would still need tin-snips to cut it. Could go the rubber route. Cut up a welly and glue onto some dense foam.

Get a car for winter Rob. Smile

I bought a pair of skateboarder's shorts that have armor over the hips and cocyx. They're like underwear I should add, fit fine under my leathers.

any cheap/easy to fit, Armour to protect this area? ta

It shouldn`t be too difficult to fit armour inserts into the hips of your riding gear. sticking/sewing some velcro strips between the armour and the lining should hold it in place and allow you to adjust the position until you are satisfied
The only problems I can see are:
How loose a fit are the trousers of your current gear? if its too loose any armour will only move on impact, if its too tight, the inserts will be uncomfortable.

Hein gericke can sell you hip armour so can getgeared.co.uk or visit the website of your trouser make unless you bought an obscure make or are years old.BTW if you fit plastic into the hip area it will either cause you discomfort or in a slide n fall do more damage to your hip.
