Well, a mate of mine is selling me a 98 Hornet 600. I know these bad boys won't have a fuel gauge, but the word on the street is that these bikes also have very shit fuel economy for a 16 litre tank!

What you, BCF? What would I see for a bike of this age? I commute 177 miles a week on a NSL so can't be good news for me, surely?

My mate gets 90 miles from a tank before reserve i really wouldn't. I hated the hornet i had for a week there's much better bikes out there for the same money.

I love the bike, and MPG is not a huge issue for me. I was averaging about 70-80 before reserve, but I do ride a little stupidly. The guys on the Hornet Forum would suggest 100-110 before reserve. The best I've ever had was 100.

Depends on how you ride it; I got about 95 after riding like a cock for a prolonged period and the best was 120 on a slow motorway journey. Reserve adds another 20 to those figures.

Cracking bikes otherwise though.

I got 143 miles to reserve once. That was in Switzerland. Average was about 100.

Thing that really annoyed me about my hornet was the midrange vibrations. A dynojet smoothed it a little, but it would still tingle the bars and footpegs between 65-95 in top gear. Bloody annoying.

Other than that, 16" front wheel limits tyre choice, suspension wasn't great and the gearbox was a bit clunky - quite sensitive to chain tension.

Was good for wheelies though Mr. Green

Those ranges you guys are getting are pretty terrible, even my 600RR has never given me under 110miles to reserve, and that's after 110miles of thrashing the shit out of it.

Normal is 120-130, had 150 out of it 2up

The Blandit gets 160 miles before reserve if i take it on any sort of run. For my commute 120/130 before i fill up without even hitting reserve!

My 93 cbr would do the right side of 50mpg easy enough and the engine is pretty similar. (believe the hornet used the engine from the 95-98 cbr?) surprised that the hornet has such a terrible range!

Only a litre less than the cbr... its the 15mpg extra I seemed to get that makes the difference.

Would the aerodynamics help with the fairings?

I was thinking that, but perversely I got my best MPG when riding through London.

I had a straight through end can and a K&N filter which may have leaned it out slightly, but the spark plugs were a pretty standard colour so I doubt 15mpg's worth of lean-ness!

Could make the difference, I assume the gearing differs as well. Either way the Hornet is a hoot but you will get friendly with your local pumps! 100miles until reserve with me unless it's the summer and I feel the need for a blast Twisted Evil

The most I got out of mine was 160 to reserve, that was touring round Europe, just like Garth did!

On average, I'd turn the reserve on around the 120 mark, so yes you'd need to refill on your journey!
