I finally got my arse in gear and got myself some brake fluid and decided after work to bleed the brakes, the entire system was of course empty after going over the faults with it earlier in the thread, which is when i encounter my first problem

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1934_zpsa84a33a7.jpg

2 minutes with the drill iand i ended up with this

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1935_zpsa8f94d83.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1936_zpse098cd8d.jpg

came out easily with the mole grips,

Now i have never had a problem with car brakes but bleeding motorcycle brakes i have found can be a real pain, for me i use this method and for me it never fails

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1937_zps7f02af09.jpg

a clear hose connected to the bleed nipple and a container on the other end (in this case a big arse syringe), fill the container a little way with brake fluid then fill the master cylinder with fluid,

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1938_zps1782bd52.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1939_zps8e15856a.jpg

then bleed as normal, with this method if you are slow you do not even have to tighten the bleed nipple just wait till any air bubbles raise to the top of the container before pumping the lever again,

on another note it seems the tell tale light has fixed itself, i will still trace the fault but as long as it works for the mot i will leave it for now,

finally for today its kama time again Karma Karma Karma Karma

today i recieved this

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1940_zps36b3ae78.jpg

not perfect by any means but in one piece and exactly what i need, thank you mr-jermy Karma Karma Karma Karma

now the only thing i can see wrong that does need sorting befor it goes on at the weekend is this

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1941_zpsf5de5670.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1942_zps0dc42712.jpg

one of the bolts that mount it to the frame has snapped in the metal work and where washer on the outside is also rusted into place, easy to get around so hopefully will be on on Saturday and the bike will be almost ready for the mot,

on the down side i spoke to the guys who mot my bikes and apparently the new law means i need the v5 in my name and a picture proof of me, the only pic proof of me i have is my license and that is at the dvla having points taken off (clean license again yay) so have to wait for that to get my plate made up Sad

edit last time i had a plate made up was 2008 when

me: Andy make me a plate fella
Andy: sure fella, got a v5 or the bike
me: yup here you go

job jobbed

jobs to do

1-New numberplate and hanger
2-fit rear indicators
3-get her dressed
4-mot

Also if anyone can show me how the number plates fit onto these bikes Karma Karma will be given Laughing[/b]

Hi

As an aside, that isn't the original master cylinder (looks possibly like a Kawasaki one). Might mean your brakes are a bit off (might be off a twin disk machine in which case the brakes will probably feel a bit dead).

All the best

today i hopefully will get her finished and ready, first job is to separate the metal bracket from the rear mudguard, this was easily done with the help of my drill

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1943_zps45335c78.jpg

so next is to remove the bolt that is left in there

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1945_zps558395b4.jpg

there was enough there to grab with the mole grips so the first thing i tried was to heat it up, this had no effect so the WAS to grind it flat and drill it out,

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1947_zps832de3d1.jpg

so once flat i got my punch out to so i could neatly drill straight through the middle when this happened

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1948_zpsc2008ef3.jpg

the welded nut punched straight out, bonus for me and easy to replace Laughing so next it is onto the wire wheel on the bench grinder to clean it up, then some of the old corrosion resistant paint and let it dry,

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1949_zps8941c0ec.jpg

so now on to the end, first i removed the rear light

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1950_zpsb3e5c3e6.jpg

then 4 m6 bolts to remove the old mudguard

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1951_zps4222cb0f.jpg

you can see here how badly damaged it is and how much has been taken off it

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1952_zpsa04fbfa7.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1953_zps0a01cf94.jpg

next we add the rear light to the new mudguard

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1954_zps65c34214.jpg

then add in the support and the indicators

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1955_zps347471ba.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1956_zps6413ff7b.jpg

then we add it to the bike (only 4 m6 bolts)

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1957_zps2f51c80d.jpg

and time to get her dressed first with the seat then the body work

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1958_zpsfcbae7d4.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1959_zpsf6fc1bad.jpg

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1960_zpsc2685205.jpg

and that is all the work i can do all that is left is a new number plate and an mot and job done Smile (providing i haven't missed anything and it fails the mot) next update will be when the dl comes back and i get the new plate and get it's mot

hey dude heres the pics of how my number plate is mounted (sorry for taking so long) the metal bracket could potentially be dis-guarded and screw the number plate straight on to the plastic mudguard Smile

hoping today would be the final day before work but a small amount to do for the last day tomorrow,

yesterday i had the new plate made up and today i fitted it, after a quick scout round and double check off i rode to the mot station who i use and came back with this

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/45171511-9922-4f3b-9012-7ddb3af3a68d_zpse205fac9.jpg

first one speaks for itself but how i missed it i have no idea Laughing

second comes from the custom mount i made up but the easy solution will be to turn the spindle round so the nut is on the other side

in all should take 20/30 mins then back to the mot station tomorrow

This morning i got up and set up for my first job, i removed the rear wheel spindle and turned it round so the nut was on the other side, a quick bounce on the rear end shows all clear so on to the next job,

Due to the nature and design i removed the clip ons and top yolk (but left everything connected) re greased the head bearings and tightened down and rebuilt,

following this it was away to the mot station and after 10 minutes a pass and a road legal ns is on the road again,

so what did this little project cost me so far (more on this in a min)

Bike --------------------£200
Bulbs ------------------£3
fiberglass kit ---------£10
Wheel -----------------£10
powdercoating -------£36
bearings and shoes --£20
pads --------------------£8.50
fork oil seals ----------£7.50
Plate refletors --------£5
Fuel Hose & Filter ----£5
Indicators --------------£10.99
fork gaitors------------£10
bleed nipple ----------£3
rear mudguard --------£20
number plate ---------£15
mot ---------------------£25

TOTAL =============£368.99

for the bike on the road not a bad price for up and coming classic 2 stroke, as i said this is so far and as a project the ns will now take a back seat while my other bike undergoes a complete rebuild,

once that is complete the ns project will come in once again and she will be transformed from the running and functional but cosmetically shocking, to hopefully one of the best examples of the f model out there (yes i know its an R),

stay tuned Thumbs Up

the shakedown

After passing its mot yesterday today i decided to give the bike a shakedown and see if all is good, the weather is poor so not ideal to road test a bike, i need to know if i can live with the bike day to day so out i went

Leeds mag 2013 Fred hill run was supposed to be on today and though i decided not to do the run i decided to go to squires which is a round trip of 32 miles for me, the run ended up being canceled so not many bikes there (was going to take photos but to cold and wet Laughing )

so i managed to get there and back with no problems and only identified 3 problems that need to look at

1 - the kick start keeps swinging out on its own while riding

2- while parked at squires there was an oily rain bow coming from the frount wheel, the fork seals are fine so its either break fluid (brakes feel fine with no fade) or the crush washers at the bottom of the forks,

3- while riding i hear a grating/rubbing sound, at 30mph but if i pull in the clutch the noise disappears, this could be normal but i will check the clutch at some point this week

other than this the bike rides and handles well but had a distinct lack of power, though i know it has been derestricted in its past it now has a restricted exhaust so i will be checking the carb and inlet and also servicing the engine while i am there

shakedown repairs
day 1

first thing for me to repair is the kick start, riding with it swinging out becomes rather dangerous so this was my first port of call Laughing

after removing and stripping the kick start it is obvious what the problem was, the bearing was missing and the spring stuck there was no way this would stay where it was supposed to be

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1971_zps2619e0fb.jpg

i tried fitting a new spring and bearing but the surrounding surface is too damaged so a replacement will have to be made, until a new kick start is sourced a bit of bodgery to keep it in while riding

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1974_zps71c28cfc.jpg

after riding her to work this morning and the sound being there from cold i was more than convinced i did not have a clutch problem more like the chain was catching on something, time for further investigation,

looking at the chain guard it is cracked in one or two places and bent in as well i thought this was possibly the sound i could hear yesterday so i had the bright idea of removing the chain guard and give it a run up the road, alas, i only got as far as removing the chain guard as in here, between the frame and chain

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1972_zps724d0685.jpg

i found this

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/DSCF1973_zps2e4b342c.jpg

Laughing when i bought the bike this was missing so i sourced a replacement although not the right one it works so i thought that would do Laughing

there you go snorty thats where it went,

a quick run up the road and my suspision was confirmed and there is no more noise

just a little more to come

when i got home i decided to have a look at the exhaust and the power issue in 6th gear

she will will rev to 8k and pull all the way but when she hits 8k theres nothing, she is good for 70/75 indicated in 5th but knock her to 6th and down she goes to sub 60 indicated

so i took off the exhaust and this is what i found

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/20130215_134829_zpsd17885dd.jpg

as you see the hole for the exhaust is around the size of a one penny piece

so after some drilling and grinding with stones on my drill out she pops

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/20130215_144932_zps6a436f66.jpg

all that is left is some residual weld

https://i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q672/Nightshaddow_Barker/20130215_144941_zps07c8f7f9.jpg

after grinding that away i gave it a coat of high temp (bbq) paint to help protect it from corrosion (as you can see the down pipe is pretty bad Laughing )

i will put it back on the bike tomorrow for you all to see and report the performance change (if any)

sorry for the poor photos taken on phone lol

first of all, the power increase is high with the exhaust free to breath she will now sit at 60-70mph easily in 6th and has a vicious kick at around 6.5-7k rpm and does wheely in first and second if you are not prepared for it.

so the bikes been on the road a couple of weeks and is very reliable so other than the shake down issues i have picked up on a couple more problems to sort out,

still to sort the oil from the front end though i now know what it is where its come from and why it is doing so...... when i replaced the fork seals i didnt replace crush washers in the bottom of the forks and it is slowly seeping out (first job next week)

also i filled the 2t oil as i only put quarter of a liter in when it went for the mot so it was low all the time, now the 2t tank is brimed the oil warning light is still on so this needs to be looked at

the indicators work intermittently, i go to use them one corner they work go to use at the second they dont, i think this is the switch gear at fault so will take a look at this,

and finally (done today) i decided to change the gearbox oil after resolving the greating sound i thought it would be a good idea to give her a service, the oil level bolt however could be turned by finger and a quick examination showed the threads are partially stripped, i took a 7mm drill bit and drilled through the old m6 hole and then used a m8 tap to fit a new bolt, also changing the gear oil.

with that and the kick start should see a mechanically sound bike
