I'd say the boots are fine and I wear similar myself. But I had a bad experience from that seller (guardsarmygear). He sent me a too small jacket because he was out of the size I ordered. He didn't contact me about it at all, if he had I'd have opted to receive a larger size which he did have in stock. He's done the same several times before when I checked his feedback. AND, he sells shit as Goretex when it isn't, it's MPV and it leaks after a month or two. |

People have used army boots in the past without any problems as far as I can recall.
When I was starting out I used a pair of normal boots. However found the gear lever knackered them. Now I guess you can use something like shoe protectors (at the risk of being dressed like a chav).

Not really.

Not really.
I take mine off for bath time, sexy time, pedalling time, or any combination of them. Yes, they're a compromise, but they do 90% of things 90% as well as a specialist shoe. People meet the Queen in them.
As to the waterproofing, I'll confirm that they passed the "6 hours sloshing ankle deep through a Highland peat bog in a lashing rainstorm" test, as well as anything biking related that I've thrown at them. Just keep putting polish or dubbin on.
Oh, doing up the laces was bugging me, so I replaced them with elastic ones (eBay, elastic / triathlon laces). Amazing things, changed my life. I'll not knot again. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thanks, we did try these actually, but they didn't fit very well in the boots he had to wear for his motor mechanics course at school. The laces Rogerborg linked should be ideal..Cheap enough that it's no hassle to try anyway |

Out of interest, how do you know it was the ankle protection in your boyfriends boots that stopped his ankle being squished?
Did you run a repeat test with other boots?
All too often we see any protection as a holy-miracle and injuries with said protection as par for the course.
The only time I have hurt the area covered by boots I was wearing top spec Sidi boots.
Tib and Fib snapped like a twig under the boots.
If I'd been wearing even stiffer boots, I suspect I'd have just snapped my legs further up.
Motorcycle clothing can move and disperse energy over space and time, but not get rid of it. |
The paramedics reckoned so, as did the doctors who saw to him; the point of impact was straight into the side of him, they were amazed that the ankle was not broken, just very very badly bruised and I suspect now possibly a fracture that wasn't noticed as he still has trouble with it to this day. The ankle protection in the boots cracked, it would have been his ankle if it was not there. But yeah, I get your point, no mythbusters style testing was done to confirm this ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?
