HI all,

i was adjusting my chain last night and noticed a bit of slack or play in the swing arm . Basically when i shake the rear wheel while on centre stand i can feel a bit of movement which after it was chased it points back to the piviot point ( if that is correct word) . it is where a big bolt is going from one side to another. Picture is below

My chain had around 5 cm play and after adjustment the situation on the swing arm seemed to have improved slightly. But the play is still there any ideas ?
I checked the nut on the other side and it seemed to be fully tightened .

In addition I found out that the small sprocket has a slight play , is that normal ? i mean the one in the picture below

It sounds as though the swing arm bearings have failed. These can be either needle bearings or plain oilite bushes. If there are no Zerk grease nipples there then these bearings are easily neglected.

New bearings are not difficult to replace. If you have the right tools.

In some instances it is a good idea to drill and tap the swing arm in a convenient place and to install grease nipples adjacent to the bearings. These cost pennies in comparison to new bearings.

As for slight play with the front sprocket, there is usually some movement there.Cheap pattern sprockets are never as good a fit as other genuine or aftermarket sprockets like Renthal or Talon.Any slop in the drive chain run is accentuated when going from a closed to open throttle, despite careful adjustment.

thanks for this, is it possible that my swing arm does not have any bearing ?

my bike is only 6 month old so not sure why this would fail,

what would be the impact of it if left unrepaired?

many thanks

i will but wondered to know if small play is acceptable and left there intentionally which i guess is not the case

out of interest if left as it is what can it cause ? would it cause the bike rear wheel to move from side to side as result of the slack in the swing arm bearing ?
