On my way into work this morn I pulled into the Tesco station nearby to top up. Trying my bestest to make sure I don't spill any drips of petrol on the tank, I starts filling up. When finished, I slowly, slowly remove the nozzle with my gloved hand underneath ready to catch any drops and......ARGH! Bucking Fastard! Petrol piss3d out the nozzle further up & not the very end where it comes out! All over the tank again. I say again because the last time I used the very same pump it did it then - only the first time I thought it was me being careless. Seems not - it's the actual nozzle that leaks. Wiped it off quick as I could & wiped some wet paper towels on it but the paint's a mess now - looks like candle wax - it was only painted a few months ago. I went in the kiosk & in my best p!ssed-off voice said to the lard-ass behind the counter "that fkn pump's p!ssed petrol all over my bike...." expecting a response......still waiting....useless, she just looked at me. Is there any point writing to complain? CCTV will surely show me throwing a dicky fit & wiping the mess off....anyone else had same issue?

Who painted the tank? Why did they not use petrol resistant lacquer?

No matter how careful I am I seem to drip petrol on my tank fairly regularly, it happens. Far better to accept that the worst will happen and prepare for it.

Next time try something like
Quote:
...excuse me my good lady. It appears the petrol dispensing equipment on your forecourt is faulty. It has unexpectedly deposit a quantity of fuel over my motorcycle. Not only is this dangerous but it has caused damage to the said vehicles petrol tank. Of course I will need your company details to notify the Health and Safety Executive of this potentially lethal and incendiary incident. Please could you direct me to your supervisor or manager where I can make a formal complaint and complete the required accident report. ...

I find talking quietly and clearly is more productive (not that I always manage it). It's too easy to ignore the idiot biker 'having a rant'.

BTW if you want to report an accident and they have no accident book as such then that's a big no-no break in Health & Safety regulations.

On a serious note, I'd me angry at whoever painted your tank not Tesco.

I've spilled petrol on all my tanks at one time or another I've never had any damage done to the paint.

I don't think I've filled up and not spilled petrol on the tank.

As said, your beef is with whatever clown painted it, sounds like a right bodge / cheap lash-up.

If he has done any other work on your bike also, I would go over that with a fine tooth comb also, sounds untrustworthy.

ho hum, wouldnt be a pump at westwood cross in thanet?

a pump there did the same thing to me, leaking from near the pump handle.

was at night so wasnt open, didnt bother to report it mostly due to my rather lame efforts at respainting my tank i actually used resistant lacquer.

if your tanks just been rattle canned, then go to halfords, but some more rattle cans, repaint it and try using hycote petrol resistant lacquer. takes a few days to fully cure so be bloody careful when filling up.

i.e fill up a jerry can then use that, more reliable not to leak than petrol pumps at stations.

OK, more fool you, but their badly maintained pump has cost you damage, let alone the fire risk from it.

Get in an early doors written demand for compo to them, with time, date, pump number, and pictures of the paintwork. Tell them you'll be expecting them to preserve the CCTV footage, and will get them estimates for repair unless they want to deal with it themselves.

Then get it to a spray shop, ideally 2 or 3, get a quote for sorting it properly, and follow up your initial demand which they'll doubtless have ignored.

Give them another couple of weeks, follow up with a "Letter Before Action" telling them that you'll be kicking off a County Court claim unless they sort it within another 2 weeks.

Wait until the promised date then if I'm guessing right, do nothing and forget all about it start your claim. No need to get solicitors involved, it's just a straight "I suffered loss to this (documented) value due to their negligence, please tell them to make it good".

Exactly! I thought that was the point of the paint - to protect against all the little knocks, scuffs and fluids.

I saw the thread title and assumed there was more to the story than petrol on the tank.. a giant fireball or maybe the OP had an actual tank? but no, he's just got a crappy paint job...

<edit> on an additional note have you noticed it's always those who do things so timidly that this happens to? One of my colleagues always uses gloves to put diesel in his car - somehow he always ends up stinking of the stuff. I did it for him the other day and not a drop spilled. Confidence...

Lemme sum this up.

You used a pump, it 'leaked' as far as you could tell. You knew this was bad for your paint so you blew it off.

You came back to the same pump and refilled, knowing that it might happen again and low and behold it did. A few drops on your tank.

IMO, (as already said) you're a fool to go back. More fool to be buying petrol when you know it could do your paint damage.

If you've know about the problem, why haven't you got it fixed?

Making Tesco pay for it is ridiculous. You will have to prove that the pump is faulty to an extent it leaks a lot.

I can't really picture how you're filling it up. You lift the pump up out after releasing the trigger, and suddenly another gush comes out? Is that even physically possible?

If you're referring to the small drops, that's normal, they're usually always a few drops.

If this is the case, it isn't Tesco's fault because this could happen at any petrol station. You're the fool who's using a paint job that isn't good enough.

Buy some lacquer, sort it out.

On the balance of probability. Making the accusation means that they have to deny it, which should at least get it sorted out.

OP, I assume that you've contacted the local council environmental health department, or the HSE and told them that Tesco have refused to acknowledge that they're letting evil volatile organic compounds escape into the atmosphere and drown kittens?
