Ok, a quick poll to see what speeds people have done on the road.

I am doing this to see what the average biker speeds are. Be honest now.

Fastest does not signify average or something I do or (maybe) did regularly.

On a clear motorway with few people around I don't have a problem doing stupid speeds, apart from the Licence angle, which is why I'm not getting high-power bikes as my main road bikes these days.

I've done 145mph, kept myself quite restrained from opening the throttle too much, too paranoid about losing my licence and 145mph was fast enough!

I've had my bike up to 85 on the road, but when i realised i slowed down a bit.
I've been about 110 on my friends Honda CRX VTEC, and even then we got overtaken by a R1!

Yes I can see it now, the judge saying,

"well he could have been doing 160mph, he must have been so restrained only doing 145mph, £30 fine, don't do it again...." Wink

This is interesting, 140 - 160mph is a common top end blast by the looks of it. Yet potentially there could be a prison sentance if you were caught doing that!

I am shocked that so many people do that speed. I am not a golden boy, I have been there as well, I just did not expect so many other riders to do the same.

The thing is its more of a case of where and when. I do stupid speeds all the time for where i am riding, but get on a motorway you feel so pathetic. I am the dually terrorist tho hehe.

Also has anyone on a naked bike noticed, on duallies you can get to like 100mph without much wind blast,on an open road.
On the m'way, cos they are so exposed you get to about 80 and your lid tries to run away. I mean it might be just me but i was like 3kph away from (indicated) 100mph earlier and was quite comfy, and had it not been for the poor brakes and junction i would probs hit it (it gets to 95 -again indicated- quite quickly but i wanna hit the magic number) with no worries, get on the m'way and the wind rush is horrendous... i mean i might go out again today on it, check its not weather dependent but its harsh Neutral

It's virtually impossible to be a squeaky clean rider when it comes to speed (even with the smallest of bikes), however it does amaze me that some are claiming 2 1/2 times the national speed limit on A roads.

The bad press that regularly appears regarding bikers, the threats of increased legislation to clamp down on us, the talk of limiting the bhp of the modern motorbike all go to show that it's not going unnoticed. Yet the majority of us moan like buggery about the Police, the Government and the way bikers are portrayed in the media.

If any of the 3 aforementioned bodies were to read a thread like this and the current responses then the arguments that are put forward to portray bikers in a slightly better image than that is painted would be shrugged off like the proverbial water from a ducks back.

The majority don't ride to the speed limits but 150 mph on the road as I've mentioned in a previous thread does us all no favours whatsoever.

In addition to the above I'd like to thank you all for making me sound like a Politically Correct Grandad Crying or Very sad Wink

Hi

Depends what you mean. I have done 145 on the roads, but that is not common (and was only just over double the speed limit on that road). It that illegal? Yes. Would it attract a severe penalty? Yes. Is it as dangerous as doing just over 60 in a realistic 30 limit? No.

Personally I think the whole country needs to stop getting so paranoid about speed. It is barely relevant from the perspective of causing accidents (excessive speed for the conditions in excess of the speed limit accounts for about 3% of accidents). If it is a clear road without hazards then there is no legitimate reason for clamping down on riders for using the performance along there. If they are going to clamp down on use then they will do so whether we do 150mph or whether we do 50mph.

All the best

Keith

I must stress that I done this on a very quiet ( as in I couldn't see another vehicle for about 2 miles in front or behind me in either direction) straight dual carriage way and it was just the once to see what the bike could do. But I had the speedo reading 170mph Shifty with a bit left in it I think. Though obviously I wasn't actually going that fast.

Also, I just accelerated up to that speed then straight on the anchors.

In the uk. with our crappy roads and ott police forces, im not too fussed about speed. probably just over 100mph is the fastest ever, but generally i dont do much over 80-90mph on Motorways, and and 70-80 on busy A-roads. On quieter B roads, and very rural areas, i.e. North wales/snowdonia, im not so paranoid, so maybe 80-90 or more. In France ive done 120 on autoroutes, and 90-100 on normal N and D roads, and never felt parnoid once, or even worried that id ever get stopped. Can see why over here that people are looking more now at unfaired bikes like streetfighters and supermoto's as they are the only way really to have fun while doing mainly legal speeds for the most part. However it takes some disipline to ride SM bikes sensibly in town, though the same goes for scooters and trailies.

As posted in another thread 150mph in the UK, though I don't think it's particularly clever.

I have seen 178 (on a ZX-9R) on an wide, flat, open French road. When I got there I felt elated but bloody exposed so I eased off straight away. Well it was 178 indicated so probably more like 170 actual.

France is a good place for sitting at 120mph to eat up the miles. The police don't seem bothered (well, I've been lucky), the traffic is light and the visibility is high. You just need to make sure you haven't got an Autoroute ticket in your pocket - they will time you from post to post and you'll pick up a fine: stop for fuel of a coffee and you'll solve the problem though.

There aren't many tracks you can get to these speeds without having a souped up bike...

Could not agree more!!!

So, heres one, what is more dangerous, the man who does 150mph on a motorway with very little traffic, or the man who is knee down round a blind corner exiting at 60mph?

Where is the danger, is it speed or just plain stupidity, maybe both?

What really give the biker a bad name with the police etc.?

I voted '80 - 100mph' as that is all my bike goes, but if it could go faster i would. 95mph feels like nothing now. Depends where your doing it really.
