Stopping stale petrol (snake oil remedy ? )

Just seen this on ebay (advertised at the bottom of the forum) makes me wonder if it really is like snake oil or do they actually work. Anyone ever heard/used them before

You can buy stabiliser, but that doesn't look like it. Looks like a lump of lead to me.

You can also put an eggcup ful of paraffin or meths in the tank before you lay it up, then top up the thing with a few litres of fresh petrol when you come to ride the thing again.

Years ago I worked in a call centre for the AA, I got asked about things like this loads of times, rang the tech guys at head office and got the reply. "Do you really work for this organisation? You are really asking this question?"
