|
|
I am looking to fix a Nonfango 848 topbox to the back of my bike, but instead of the usual position – I want it to sit directly behind me in place of a pillion. I need the fixing to be secure as the bike is left parked in the city during the day. I have the topbox, plus the mounting plate and a couple of steel arms that were supplied with the bike.
Does anyone have experience doing similar? I’m aware that the couriers use bungees etc but I haven’t seen any directly fixed using bolts. Would it be strong enough to fix through the seat directly using coach bolts (one piece seat on a mk2 bandit 12) and a couple of steel plates, one either side of the topbox bottom surface? How would I ensure the seat is still waterproof?

I've done this before on the ZX9 and GSXR (got a spare 'race' hump for the GSXR - should have just got another seat instead.
On the ZX9 I never did anything special to stop water going in, but separate seats.
Sure you could cover the top box plate somehow to stop the vast majority of water when the box wasn't on.
Just used some long bolts (maybe threaded rod) and big washers on the end with my cheap givi (scooter) top box. Worked nicely.
Coped perfectly fine with my usual 'daily antics' . |

Without seeing the mounting points a bit difficult to visualise...
...however....
Could you not knock up a n shaped mount to fit over the seat. The sides can be metal strips drilled and screwed to suitable bike points (or passed under locked seat maybe?). These then bent/riveted/whatever to a top plate (or other metal strips) that can be drilled to take topbox mounting plate.
Downside is that not quick or easily to remove should need pillion seat. Then that's an advantage thinking of security.
...although that might be over engineering it. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Cheers all.
Did you all use the connector plate or does it work with just the seat and the topbox?
The pesky Nonfango plate is huge and the connecting bolts would have to have small allen heads to fit within the recessed adjustment grooves on the top surface... I used the plate so that i didn't destroy the box with holes in the bottom and it stays waterproof but if i'm going out without the box i put on the hump or pillion seat that came with the bike.
You could get a givi plate for it since they are the same. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
