 |
|
It seems like a part of biking, an inevitability that every biker will face one day, the dreaded crash. As a new biker, I fear that I have no choice but to experience the tarmac or another vehicle at some point in circumstances beyond my control.
Even with my short time on this forum, I've seen more than enough members recount their unfortunate experiences. I'm not trying to tempt fate or anything, but I don't believe that saying 'I've not had a crash!' will cause you to tumble the next day.
So who here has NOT had a crash? For definition, we'll count a crash as something that has caused injury to yourself (or another) and significant damage to the bike, and has prevented you from simply getting up and riding away with no insurance details swapped or vehicle recovery needed. If you have only had a very minor spill with not much more than a bruised ass, ego and some bike scratches, then mention that.
It would be interesting to know how long you have been riding (and from what age), what you ride (and how often/what purpose) and any major close calls and if it was luck or skill that saved you, so we can get a picture of what kind of biker you are and if your biking style plays a part in this.
I'll be worried if no-one replies, haha! |

Been riding more or less non stop since November 2006, had two crashes involving other vehicles, both non fault (second probably could have been avoided with better positioning though).
Dropped my TS50X on the drive after washing it, that bike also got crashed up a tree and dropped at standstill again by two friends off road. First crash involving another vehicle was on this bike.
Don't think I ever crashed my TDR250, it did catch alight when I was working on it in the garage once though.
Crashed my GPZ500 when showing off how low we could get on a roundabout to my friend, got a little too low! Also dropped it when riding over sheet ice at less than 10mph.
Crashed my NTV600 on ice at around 30mph. The only witness was a pedestrian who started shouting at me while I was still on the ground. Bitches be crazy!
ZZR600 was the second accident involving another vehicle, a car pulled across the front of me on the entrance to a roundabout. With better awareness and positioning I probably could have avoided that accident. Two police cars witnessed the accident, spot of luck there! The bike was a bit of a lemon too so got lucky twice when it was written off.
CBR600 was never crashed, even though it was stolen 2 or 3 times it was never even dropped.
Divvy 900 hasn't seen the ground with me on it yet, has the battle scars from a previous owner though. It is a big heavy bike and I've nearly lost my footing on leaves a few times though, I sense it is only a matter of time.
Basically I had a few dumb accidents between the ages of 16 and 18/19, I seem to have learned from them though as I'm on to faster bikes now and still crashing less than I used to.
Edit: never broken a bone in a crash, nothing worse than scrapes and bruises on the surface. I do have a pretty bad knee now though, doesn't stop me doing anything, definetly weaker though and it's getting worse. Think the original injury was from the ZZR crash. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock.

I've had one incident worth mentioning, and it was my fault for thinking I could beat Mama nature. Few little drops here and there, but they've all been within my first week of picking new bikes up. As said though, most accidents aren't all that serious, and biking is less dangerous than you think! ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

I've been on a bike riding most days since February, and apart from this minor accident where I stayed on the bike, haven't had any accidents or offs.
Riding a CG125 then a CB500 covering approx 18,000 miles in this time, all weathers.
I generally respect how much danger I am in, you won't find me popping wheelies or trying to get my knee down, trying to stay on the bike is my aim. I'll overtake on country roads and filter almost as much as the next man but generally don't go stupid and always on the look out for idiots.
I'm still resigned to the fact I'll come off at some point, skill only gets you so far, luck plays a part. I think it generally takes two people to have an accident, one to do something stupid and the other not to have foreseen them doing something stupid, but sometimes someone will do something so stupid that the other party didn't stand a chance.
TL/DR: I haven't had a crash but that doesn't mean I think I'm above having one or that I'm safe when on the bike.

Thanks for the responses. I think it's one of those examples where everyone can list their crashes but no-one says "nope, nothing bad here" so it always seems like it's far worse than it is.
The non-bikers I know (parents, mainly) think I'm going to be pink mist in a matter of days, haha! |

My last proper spill was back in '82. Mind you, I only just got back on a bike after a 26 year break. ____________________ 22PlusY

i have not had any major crashes and in 13 years on the road only 2 minor spills,
once in 2008 traveling along with traffic ant 40mph and the van in front turned into a junction and a cager pulled out and stopped right in front of me, i slammed all on and hit at between 3 and 5 mph *estimate bike fell over and broke a panel and indicator i bruised my bum.
second was last year, come to a junction and at about 10 mph grabbed to much front brake and low sided i stayed on my feet but bike knocked out an indicator and scratched exhaust.
one bloke i ride with has been riding around 35 years and clames the worst he has had is the bike falling off the stand ____________________ "WHAT DO YOU MEAN 100 MPH THATS IMPOSSIBLE Its chinese OFFICER."

I toppled off my first bike at a standstill twice (The best being directly into the middle of a nettle bush). I also came off on ice in a car park a few years back but decent boots saved both my feet and my engine casings ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

Managed about 5 years across 3 bikes total 40,000 mile before my first off recently. Was a stupid one easily avoidable. Forks slight twisted in yoke, twisted easily back, and need too replace a bar end. Not bad one |
