Anyone done it, what have you gotten away with?

It must happen now and then, some of the cv's I've gone through and then quizzed them on it, not asked for proof (do many companies want proof?) and they simply don't know what they're talking about, yet have it listed as a qualification, skill or experience in.

i've filled in some employment gaps and got jobs in the past. feel pretty steady in my current job though, so hopefully i'll be all rosy from here on in.

one a lot of people are doing now, i hear, is putting "period of personal study"... instead of unemployment.

What do I put? I'm not employed and am quite happy about it. Had enough savings to go without working for a short while. Need to find a job now. Have actually spent my free time studying very, very hard! Boooooo!

I get what you mean though. My dad has had a shit time finding work because of his age and his lack of 'qualification' (because 30 years in the the finance business, from the days when you could work your way up from nothing - hence no 'qualification' -, isn't enough now). His CV is full of periods of work as a 'consultant'. Looks naff and hollow, but can't put much else!

yeah i was told gaps look suspect. like you left or were fired from previous job and nobody wanted you. so "why should we?" ....

if you can fill your gaps with something seemingly worthwhile, then it goes without saying, you're more employable.

i had one where i genuinely did a uni course, so had a year of study on there. and then another 8 months where my only income was freelance journo for various car and boxing magazines which was barely a "job", and it felt very much like unemployment most of the time, but it looked ok on the cv. the boxing ones came first, and were unpaid too. but it was "work", all the same.

anything that looks or smells like work will do for the purposes of filling gaps in employment history.

qualifications are another matter, and i've never had them checked even though i've never lied about them. I have a diploma in japanese, but not once have i been asked to say something in japanese haha

what would you put though? "yeah i'm a qualified plumber mate"... wouldn't take long before you were found out would it even if they didn't check your qualification

I left school in 1990, I have no recollection what i got other than a B in GCSE Design Technology.

I remember that one because it was the only one that was C or above.

Lying on CV's is inevitable. The scale of the lie is directly proportional to the role being filled. Telling someone you got a C in Maths 25 years ago when applying for a job at B&Q is never going to cause bother.

Saying you are a surgeon with 15 years exeperience, when applying for a role at a Hospital is somewhat of a larger scale lie.

Never lied on my CV or in interview, means I can't be tripped up with facts later on.

I recently attended a meeting tho where a careers consultant was curious about a few of our CVs so when I showed mine to clarify it was pukka then she spent a week dissecting it, eventually re-arranged it to show employment of longevity rather than skills suiting jobs I apply for on the side.

Guess these days employers are valueing people's attributes rather than proven skills?

I work in skilled positions which require a Batchelors engineering degree at minimum. I have yet to be asked for a copy in the 4 roles I've had thus far, two of which are for very large Tech companies. Neutral

I've never lied as I don't need to - grade scores are high enough not to bother Laughing However, for the first time EVER, I've been asked to supply a copy of all of my certificates for a new job I've applied for. Good job I kept them, then.

So anyway, you could get caught out, I guess.

The only time i've been asked for proof of my degree is when I joined a graduate scheme straight out of uni.

I suppose there is always a distinct chance they may just ring up the university to confirm in case there would be a doctored certificate.

In the insurance industry we have the CII qualifications of which there are various grades. A friend of mine moved to a new company who then organised his PC, laptop, blackberry, business cards etc. When he looked at his business cards they had Dip CII written on them - which he wasn't qualified to. The company told him to continue using the cards whilst they got some more printed up. He dished out 50 or so whilst waiting for the new batch. Somehow they got back to the CII who cross referenced it and found that he didn't have the qualification - and they threatened to take him to court!!

Never lied, I'll happily play up the truth though.

I start a new job around the 14th of next month as a maintenance engineer. I've worked in nothing but retail for the last 6 years, I got mediocre GCSE's and got kicked out of my first college. On paper I'm not the right candidate.

The role is internal which helped get me the interview, from there I just expanded on anything I thought was remotely relevant and hoped they liked the cut of my jib.

I get a 30% salary increase and paid for courses in a relevant field of my choosing (probably going with metal work). WIN.

The moral?

Don't under-sell yourself, but be sure you can live up to the expectations that you give. For me, I know I can do the job, I just had to remove any doubt in the interviewers minds.

I employed a 22 year old based on his CV and an interview in which he verbally backed-up his CV and I felt he would be trainable; however, I also followed-up on his references.

His references came-back and revealed a tissue of lies and he turned-out to be untrainable. Out the door he went and good riddance to bad stuff.

Yeah I agree references should and usually get checked, however the previous employer isn't by law allowed to say they're bad, only praise. However my boss just said if anyone rings up and wants to use us as a reference and they were bad:

Then say I cannot answer that question through the risk of slandering the applicant Wink

Only do this if they are a genuine danger and terrible workers

I hadn't been either, in 15 years / 4 jobs, but this latest one wanted to see the lot - even my typing exam certificates Laughing

I don't have a clue where half of the certificates are. To be fair though it would be fairly hard to fake knowledge in the roles I've worked in.

I read a lot of CV's and you tend to find that people tend to distort reality rather than out and out lie.

I think you may find it's a case of they cannot say bad stuff if it isn't true. They can of course tell the truth.

Hi

One place I worked at kept all the CVs they were sent (mainly programming roles). Next time the CV of that bod arrived they cross checked it with previous ones that had arrived. Made it easy to spot liars (who didn't get to the interview stage).

All the best

Not having any qualifications means I never had to lie about them. 'Left school at 15 to start full time work' is all I put in there.

Mind you, my last job was 7 yrs and current one 15 so it hasn't come up all that often. Being a poor liar, and finding it difficult to deal with the shame of even being found out means that 'truth and be damned' is my favourite tactic.

You can say what you want in a reference as long as it's relevant and factual.
