How did you check the slack and how much slack did you leave?

Did you adjust both sides of the rear axle equally?

As an example, on my Hornet and my OH's Zephyr the normal slack is about 30mm. It should be measured in the middle of the lower run of the chain at the tightest part of the chain (spin the rear wheel and check continually to find this).

Your mates were wrong unfortunately.

Put the bike on a paddock stand so that you can rotate the rear wheel, check the slack in the middle of the bottom run, find the tightest spot and adjust the slack at that point by loosening the spindle nut and adjusting both sides of the spindle equally until it's correct. Use the markers on each side of the swing arm to check that you've got the wheel straight. Don't forget to retighten the spindle nut.

If you're unsure about that then measure the distance from the centre of the swingarm pivot to the centre of the rear spindle. It should be the same distance on both sides.
