main bearings aren't in the cases far enough, there was a special tool I used to have that pulled the bearings into the cases properly, if you didn't used it this happened, as I found out when I had a week off from work and someone else tried to do the job without the special tools!

if you haven't got access to the tools the you'll need to stick the cases in a warm oven for a while and the bearings in a freezer, leave them there for a bit and the bearing will then drop into the cases without any force required

awesome, thanks a lot duder. Thumbs Up

FYI this engine has suffered some hardcore abuse, friend's not-so-clever mate tried to do the job, and got the water and vacuum hose wrong way wrong and flooded the whole engine with water which then consequently rusted. Managed to salvage the crank and brand-new head+piston after washing it with lots of hot water and scrubbing with a toothbrush, then soaking in paraffin overnight.

Main bearings are a still a bit noisy so will be replacing them anyway.
