Hello, again, thanks for the useful tips earlier in the year for my XR 250. My friend very kindly helicoiled the thread, and put the engine back in for just £15 and the gaskets.

Having big trouble starting my Honda XR on colder days, it is kick start only. I generally idle with fuel tap off when I park up, rev it a couple of times then kill the engine, and start it without twisting the throttle, and some choke, switching to half choke as soon as it fires. If its been left a while, takes a couple of kicks.

Colder days, I'm kicking and kicking and kicking and kicking, and I'm fat and out of breath. I've started using easy start. Later in the day, as long as the engine isn't stone cold, it will start easy enough,

Dunno what plug is in it, usual NGK whatever that the garage put in I guess.

Are there better plugs I can use to ease starting on colder days?
Or any other tips for starting this?

Go and get a iridium spark plug for your bike it's a bit expensive but you will see results

Try full choke and no throttle. Leave the plug for now. Or of need be go get what the manual says.

With my TTR600, cold engine means fuel on, ignition off.

Small kicks bringing it to TDC, nice and hard.

Ignition on, massive jump on it and let it idle for about 15 seconds or while I put lid and gloves on. Ride down the road for a bit still on choke and slowly turn the choke off after a mile.

That's a fairly big single though, expect it to work just as well.

You should be able to start the bike, hot or cold from a single kick from TDC.

From cold, full choke.

Note the wearing of soft plimsolls.

No one could start it on the stand, let alone off the stand.

It was higher than anything I've ever seen Laughing

Yeah, starting that bike was difficult, standing on pegs on mud whilst kicking it really freaked me out. I had to get paddy to start it for me Embarassed

Lots of fun once it was going though!
