 |
|
Okay as some of you may know, I rode to Greece and back on a 125 this past summer (2012 CBF 125) and I eventually plan to ride around the world on one (I'm thinking spring 2014 start date, hopefully on a 125 Varadero, really want to try one out) As for this summer, I want to do a few trips. One being through the Alps and around the south of France, Italy etc and back again.
Now it's less distance than my jaunt to Greece and back I hear you cry, yes. But I want to take my girlfriend this time. Now I might bite the bullet and take my 650 BMW but I'm just aching to do it on the 125 again. I ferry her about all the time on nice days here, when we don't want to take the car, and there's no issue with performance on the bike really, can hold 60 fine, sure it's a little sluggish but it's really not a problem, I want to take my time on this trip anyway.
But that sort of duration, with a pillion, on a 125, with luggage... I'm sceptical myself... Any opinions?
Thanks as always. |

That trip was solo but yes, with all my camping gear etc, was an absolutely wonderful experience. No issues with speed or keeping up with traffic, small country roads the whole way, a month of whizzing around the mountains of Europe and camping under the stars, heaven! |

My teenage years were spent hiking multi day/week trips across Europe/Asia, so I've spent collectively a couple of years in tents I'd say, so I've a vast collection of tents, bags etc... If you need any advice at all, just let me know, more than happy to help. This for taking on the back of a bike etc? Just you or with a pillion? Weight and size restrictions? As for air mattresses, great for comfort but I tend to not bother these days, I'm 23 and in (no ego) very good shape, I've been camping, mountaineering etc for years so I make do with a foam roller usually. My Bag depends utterly on the seasons and altitude etc. Tent, I favor a 2 man tent even on my own, purely because I like to have somewhere I can stretch out, light candles, read etc...
But again, any questions etc just let me know, it's my forte. |

Anyone can do anything with the right mindset etc (within reason).
BUT, my main concern would be the GF......I know, what's wrong with me..... But if she is a bit of a moaner (and not in a good way), being cramped on a thinly padded 125 struggling to crack 35 on hills, could put a dampener on the whole thing.
2/3rds of the world seems to bumble about with 3 people onboard 125's, but if it was me and a lass on the back, I'd definitely go the 650 route.
I'm off to search for your posts on the Greece trip
Have fun! |

Hey nice - thanks. Maybe I should suss out what I want to know in a bit more detail, then fire off a PM. I'm just trying to think what I might need for when it gets a bit warmer. I'm making plans all the time, but haven't done anything like this for a good while, so aren't sure where to start. ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

This type of thing Is mainly why I decided to go with motorbiking. Last summer I spent countless hours on my roadbike exploring the countryside. 3 hours on a motorbike would be much more adventure. Am looking into a veredaro myself!

I applaud you for doing trips on the 125 and as you know I`m a fan of tiddler-touring, but I think you might be asking to much of 125 going two up plus gear?
I would love you to prove me wrong and show me it can be done without it becoming an ordeal. |
These were my initial thoughts too. I applaud you for managing that trip on a 125, but feel that 2up with luggage for 2 people would be asking a little much of the bike.
It's all down to your digression though, I guess.
Would it not be a good idea to load up the bike and go on a dummy run of 100-200 miles or so? Maybe a weekend in Wales or Scotland instead, on the 125 of course. Afterwards both decide whether you were happy with the performance and comfort offered by the little work horse. ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |
