Had a GT220 come with the standard computer i baught, ran everything miserably as well, upgraded to a GTX260, runs everything even now on max well enough, they can be picked up reasonable price now.

The Radeon 6850/6870s are the best value cards out there at the moment assuming your CPU is up to it as well.

Either a 6xxx series AMD card or a GTX 5xx/6xx NVIDIA card is what you want.

Shameless plug here but I have an XFX Radeon HD6990 4GB GDDR5 dual GPU card in my system at the moment. I will switching over to a GTX680 card in the next few weeks.

If anybody wants a card that cost me over £600 in January 2012 for around the £270 mark, let me know as I will be putting it on ebay soon. It absolutely destroys any game you throw at it with immense FPS on maxed out settings.

Reason I'm switching is because I want NVIDIA 3D Vision and I want to buy a 144hz ASUS 27" monitor that will only work with an NVIDIA card.

what you have to watch with some of the faster high end cards is physical size (and power requirements) and your pc form factor will also determine what choice you have in the way of graphics cards, higher end sff card demand a price premiem over standard size cards and choice is very limited.

Do you have any pcie 6 or 8 pin plugs on your psu? how many watts is it rated for and how many amps on the 12v rail?

If you have a branded pc that came with descrete graphics then i'm assuming you have around a 400-450w psu, in that case I would recommend an ati radeon hd7750 or hd7770, both are very capable cards upto around 1080p and are dx11 and play very well with aa, af, etc and run very cool and quiet.

The hd7770 does require an external power connection but if you have any free molex plugs you can buy an adaptor for a few £'s the 7770 can be had new for around £70-90 but the hd 7750 is power directly from the pcie slot and can be found anything from £60-80.

The7770 comes clocked at 1ghz but the 7750 comes in two clock speeds 800mhz and 900mhz, the higher one does need an external connection for some reason even though it is sub 75W power consumption (75W is pcie slot maximum) worth keeping that in mind if you decide on one of those.

this chart apparently shows total gpu power consumption under full (synthetic + gaming) load, proving that some cards can work on much lower rated psu then the vendor recommends (providing the psu is good quality/efficiency and can produce what it is rated at)

What prawny said ^

The 6990 is 1ft long and takes up 2 slots in height. It's a very big card and it draws 350w power from 2x 8pin connectors, so it's a power hungry monster. I'm running a 1000w modular coolermaster silent pro, which is a fairly high end PSU.

Last thing you need is your card sucking all the power from the PSU and it failing to run.
