This is my first post...
Hi Guys!
but i have been thinking.. i have past my mod 2 last week, so i got in their before the licensing scheme changes for people under 24
im allowed a 33bhp for 2 years then im unrestricted.
i was looking at the standards, ninja 250r and cbr 250
but had read in other places that im better off with a restricted 600/500. is it worth is after insurance. I live in a not so lovely part of London so insurance is the main factor.
Thanks!

I'm in the same situation as you. Need something that looks nice and sporty (I presume you want a sports bike? Not a cruiser lol). But because I'm 18 can't afford modern 600 sports bikes.
The list I just posted are the bikes I was looking at. I went for a Thundercat in the end. Restricted to 33bhp. Love it. Just have a look around to see what you can afford to buy and then run some quotes through.
EDIT: My Thundercat is £800 a year to insure by the way ____________________ Honda CBR600f sport

125 are More expensive to insure because you we're a learner so high insurance.you are now a qualified rider so are regarded as being safer.you.d be surprised that you will now find a large cc bike pretty present to insure
Plus after 2 yrs no need to buy another bike instant power upgrade when restriction is removed

I'd personally want to be looking for an older approx. 33bhp bike, or something under say 40-45bhp, that won't feel much different restricted either.
If your happy with older bikes and want something that might need work/maintainence and looking after to stay reliable, then you can find older bikes in this bhp range, from 125cc to about 400cc or more for something like a big single trail bike etc.
I'd not go out and pay the premium for a new/modern 250cc sporty bike, even though they do look like harmless fun, but are just way to expensive for what you get.
I also don't really buy the whole buy a 600cc bike with say 80-100bhp and restrict it down to 33bhp, as I just can't see what the point is of having all that capacity, weight and things like braking performance and physical size for just 33bhp.
I'm not the best person to talk to as I've never ridden anything restricted to 33bhp, but why would you want the fuel cost, insurance, tyre costs and general maintainence of a 100bhp 600cc bike if it's restricted to 33bhp.
After 2years it'll probably be all coked up and run like a bag of shit for a while anyway, and worst of all is that you still have the same physical bike as before that your likely to be getting bored of, despite suddenly having 2-3times the power, which won't really be that impressive if the rest of the bike has gone off in that time, chassis and braking wise anyway.
I'm sure life would be nice for 2year's on a 33bhp Thundercat, but I think something like a VTR250 or SRX250 would be more fun for that time and leave you ready to want to change to a new machine to celebrate the start of your un-restricted license. |
