Well, as most are probably aware I'm in hospital with a brain injury basically, and will be for some time (I'm at home on a home visit for the weekend), but will not be able to use my bike for some time I think/ believe. Now I'm going to talk to my consoltant next time I see him to get a time scale window of how long I'm looking at, but was looking for some ideas on what people reckon would be best for me to do with it.

Basically, my choices are:

1. Sell it, as its just sitting in the garage doing nothing other than deprciating slowly as time goes on.
2. Keep it and hang onto it until I'm allowed to be on the roads again, but that might be like ages away.
3. Sell it, and use the money for buying/ being trained up again basically starting again from a smaller bike back then building up again.
4. Sell it, and not get a bike again (kinda wanting to do this, as I don't really want to use the road really :-\ )

The TL, most people probably know stuff about it, but for those who don't, I bought it some point last year, and have just had a costly repair done to the gearbox.

Thanks for any suggestions and feedback as to what peoples thoughts are.

To me this seems like the most sensible idea, you may be able to keep the TL until your fully trained up again but if I was you I wouldn't want to jump straight back on to it. Maybe you wouldn't have to start from a 125 to be trained though, we have plenty of Bros's lying around with owners that don't care for them! Razz

I can understand exactly why you have said this but it just isn't practical really, I'm pretty sure that in the future you will need to be on the road, surely a few weeks of public transport would annoy you enough to make you want to be on the road again.

I'd say keep it, If your like me you'll spend it on useless stuff and then realise you've got loads of junk for your money.

Or do the retraining route Thumbs Up

Hasn't alot of money already been lost on it due to the gearbox?

If it's running well now i'd say keep it.

From what i think i know you didn't get alot of miles on the TL before the gearbox problem did you? I'd like to see you get some money's worth out of the new gearbox before you sold.

Hi

I can understand why you are not too keen on going on the road. However, car or bike, you are going to land up using the road again. Maybe you will give up on bikes for a while, but I suspect you will want to be back on 2 wheels fairly soon.

As to the TL, it is going to be a few months before you can ride it again but that will put it into winter which is not a good time to sell the bike. The TL might also be quite expensive to insure should the DVLA get silly with you.

To an extent I would say keep it as it gives you a target to aim at. However I do think it would not be a good bike to be used for riding getting used to riding again (I would suggest getting something like an XT350, easy to ride, fairly light, cheap, etc).

All the best

Keith

Hi Ste, good to see they let you out for the weekend Thumbs Up
I'd have to agree with Shaun on this one, whereas it sitting in the garage not doing an awful not is hardly helping....I wouldn't jack it in completely. But working your way up the engine sizes again, very sensible!

Hi Ste, welcome back, even if only for the weekend Thumbs Up

The TLR, I haven't been where you are and don't know how you feel about it right now, but from an "out-siders" perspective from speaking to you on the forum I'd say..

From what I've seen/heard of you, you are a bloody good rider, and although your having memory troubles, you don't "forget" how to ride a bike (I don't think anyway? Not sure!)

Basically, the TLR is a big bike, and when you do get back on a bike for a while it'll be like learning over again. So a TLR is going to be a bit crazy.

BUT I don't think you should go out and get a moped or a 125 Laughing I think you should go for a 400 or something, NC30 etc. Great bike for getting back into biking on etc. Then you can get back on your TLR when your used to riding again, or if you have to sell it anyway, then you have the opportunity to buy another big bike.

If it's any help, I crashed this time last year, I lost about a months worth of memory, including the crash, I remember a few little things in the 3 or so weeks after, then everything went fine from there.. Which means I don't remember the actual accident.

4 or so months later, I got back on a bike, and it didn't bother me one bit, because I didn't remember crashing etc, I went out with some good mates I could trust, and led the group so that we went at my pace and after a week or two I was riding like normal. So you should be fine mate, just take it easy and don't rush getting back on a bike Thumbs Up

My crash wasn't all that serious, especially compared to what you've been through, so what I just said may be totally useless to you, but just trying to help Smile

This may sound like bollox (& I'm sure you'll all be quick enough to point it out if it is Laughing ), but, why not sell your bike & by a track bike? You could spend the next few months & over the winter setting it up just as you want it, I'm sure there's plenty of your friends who would be only to happy to help out, this would give you something to aim for &, when you're ready, lets you get back into riding in a relatively safe enviroment. Once you are comfortable riding again you can get back on the road, I'm sure I don't have to say it, but there is no hurry.

Or, you could sell it & throw a huge party, surrounding yourself with dozens of naked women, or men, whatever floats your boat. Spending all your cash on wine, women & song is always tempting & certainly works for me on a Saturday night (but don't tell my girlfriend) Laughing Laughing

Hello Ste good to see you're out of the hospital and working your brain (rather than on the nurses Wink) As for the bike It has cost you alot to repair it so far, you've pretty much lost alot of money on it already.

The only thing is you're not working and won't be for a while at least and it won't be money you'll need for a while. Other thing to do is sell it and stick the money in something with high interest so it's doing something.

I'd gor for the selling it Thumbs Up although it's not much at least it won't be depreciating (y) and will get you a little more (I realise I could of said that in like 1 sentence but I like to babble Wink)

I'd sell it.

Stick the cash in the bank for now, where it will gradually gain interest instead of gradually depreciating.

When you can ride again, get something forgiving and slowly build up to quick bikes again.
Or get a car.

I'd wait and see what the consultant says. If you're gonna be physically up to riding in, say, 6 months it's worth keeping the TL and see how you get on with it, but if (god forbid) it's gonna be years then it's not really worth keeping it so put the cash in a high interest account until you can ride again.
*fingers crossed* for good news though!

Hey Ste, nice to hear from you again Thumbs Up

As for the dilemma with the TL, well personally I'd sell it. Put the money in a high interest account etc and see how much you have to play with when you've recovered Very Happy

Take it easy, Kristof Mr. Green

Don't sell the TL because of the money - that is not going to be an issue as you well know.

Sell it cos you don't want to ride it again, sell it cos you don't want it sitting in your garage, sell it cos you'd rather see it being used but don't sell it just cos it's 'losing money'.

There is more to life than £s.

Need to do lots of hassling of the consultant on Monday firstly about this and then lots of other things Laughing. Not planning on selling it for the money, as at the moment I'm not spendiing anything and also as well as normal pay getting £50 per day from the health care company, which is up to £3200 so far Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm just thinking of selling it well, as I don't need or want it for possibly quite a while. I reckon I might hang onto it and just start learning again on rented/ bought smaller bikes and just sell them when I've used them I reckon. Need to talk with a training school really. Anyone know any which can deal specifically with getting people back on the roads after medical conditions? Actually, I guess born again biker training place might be the best bet. Confused Laughing Laughing Thumbs Up

Hi Ste,

Nice to see you've been out for the weekend.

As for the TL, I'd wait to see what the consultant has to say before you sell it or not.

As for getting back to riding, don't let the car accident sway you. From what I have been told, you was a good rider, this should help you when it comes to getting back on a bike.

Start off small, learn to ride again on a 125 - 350cc first, get a few miles under your belt, then move up to a bigger bike of say 400 - 500cc. The idea of a training school is a good idea, book up a few days at a time with one of the riding schools, give them the full story too. The DVLA might be a problem if the hospital say your not fit to ride for awhile, but with any luck this should not happen.

I wish you all the best, and hope that your recovery continues on it's current track.

Ian.
