The sort of person who bought a white one is the sort of person who will have joined their local IAM group and been anal with the servicing.

If you're going to spend money on it. Spend it on the brakes.

You're not going to know what's hit you after riding a divvy. Just so as you know, it's called acceleration.

Mine wasn't:

I'd like that back actually!

Agree with Stinkwheel. Spend on the brakes. They were a bit crap. The engine, on the other hand, was sublime. I've ridden many newer bikes, but never anything smoother.

And the handling was on par with most 90's 750cc sportsbikes. Very capable all round.

The ugly one?

It's the best and most sporty VFR ever produced and the later mk1's with the brake and suspension improvements were more than able to hang with a GSXR750 Slabbie on the road, and do a lot of stuff better except the lairy attitude!

A few £££ spent on a good mk1 VFR will create a pretty capable machine even compared with later sportier 750's.

A grand or so would make one bloody awesome!

Rode one for a while, they're not slow. For a bike of their era they're actually bloody good all round... cept the brakes they weren't too hot Laughing

Had my 89 VFR for a week and a half now. Loving it Thumbs Up

Brakes feel great coming from the cb500 (drum model too) Razz there no where near as good as the ones on the thundercat or cbr600 i test rode but the engine felt so good i fell in love there and then.

I'd love to get mine up to the same condition as the bikes here (cosmetically though)....

Also I found the zxr wanted to lift the front at lower revs (about 4 - 5k)

What are your plans for that OP?

That's the exact bike I went out to buy myself as a 21st birthday present, in 1986; couldn't get a white one (that was the colour to have and everyone was sold out) and the other choice was doom blue, so I ended up with an XJ900 instead.

I could be tempted to take that off your hands and find out what might have been.

I know you didn't ask me.but...

Buy a set of 6-pot callipers. No really, do this, it is TOTALLY worth it. I splurged on a set of pretec callipers and it made the bike absolutely fucking awesome. Brakes so good you don't need to use them, just open the throttle and watch corners open themselves out in front of you.

A multi-adjustable rear shock, some modern tyres then service the forks and have them sprung to suit your weight is the next thing. I personally HATE the standard handlebar position so hacksaw/file the locating tabs off and put them where you want.

A free-breathing exhaust because it's a V4 and everyone shoudl hear it.

I'm still undecided about the stage 1 tune. It smoothed out and increased the power delivery but at some cost to character. It used to bimble up to 6k, come on cam at 7k and go utterly mental at 10k. Now it pulls, pulls and pulls more but I do miss the kick up the arse changing down 2 or 3 gears gave. It's faster now but it doesn't FEEL faster.

This thread = Win!
But needs moar 3rd Gen
https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/VFR%20750/IMG_0365_zps1e40e8f6.jpg

My 94 with Phil's 97, same bike bar the years but his feels a hell of a lot more involving to ride with sorted suspension and lowered clip ons.

The brakes even when sorted with braided hoses, new seals and HH pads still aren't all that but are acceptable for road use, will go for the pretec six pots as Stink suggested to me months ago some day (getting a bit bored of it at present and feeling the bug to make some alterations)

Thanks for picture Moxey.

You just confirmed to me that matt black IS, in-fact, the correct colour to have my new plastics and tank painted.

I knew this but I was feeling bad about doing it to brand new plastics. These bikes do look great matt black.

EDIT: Oh, I should mention, a 60 section front tyre makes it a different bike. Slightly twitchier but in terms of overall FUN, it's better to have to pull it up out of a corner than force it down into one.

The above is the kind of thing I'd ideally be looking to do with an early VFR750. Smile

Plz note....ugly yes.....when they sold these to the public first year...a moto jorno entered one in wsb.....and scored points......still with the tax disk on!.....compared to my gsxr750 h......well I'd be playing tunes on the gearbox just to keep up if he opened the throttle in 6th.....made the same hp to the wheel but just lots better. Forks need a bit more pre load and the fork bushes wear.....however....150 mph ain't bad for the 80's

Sure you aren't on about PB putting an almost standard VFR750 into a KRC Endurance Championship race at Snetterton? It was an 8hr endurance race in 1997, they came 12th of 48. A few pros have ridden them in almost stock form in a few things, but that's the only journo entry I can think of.

WSB didn't exist when these things came out, and the equivalent was F1, which no standard roadbike would stand a chance in, being that most of the bikes in there were borderline prototypes.

Fred Merkel and Wayne Rainey ran them in the 86 AMA championship, for Superbike and F1, both were multiple winners.

Rocket Ron got on the podium in the Transatlantic Trophy with a bone stocker, but it was raining, which obviously helped.
