Andy + I rode to Thruxton yesterday on single carriageway national speed limit roads. He wanted to ride at 80-90mph + overtake lots. I wanted to ride 70-80mph and overtake less. I think this is down to the fact that we've now got a daughter and I've had some form of self-preservation hormone kick in!
Trouble is we're going to Donington for the GP next month, so who should compromise? Should I forget the 'mum' thoughts and speed up? Or should Andy accept that I'm not as fast as him and slow down? Or should we try to meet in the middle? If so, how?!
Any input gratefully accepted - help us sort out a domestic dispute!!

At the end of the day, you should ride within your comfort zone, and not ride faster than you feel comfortable with. Andy should appreciate this and keep his speed lower, out of consideration for you Smile . Tell him a group is only as fast as the slowest rider Thumbs Up .

I didn't even read your post before voting for him to slow down to your speeds.

When riding in a group, even if just two, you should always slow to the slowest person speeds.

Ask 30sumthin_gal. We was out last thursday and her NSR is restricted, so I just sat at her speeds doing wheelies, we had a very good ride out, she rides that NSR flat out hehe bout time she de-restricted it (hint hint)

And on our club rideout, we always think about the slower riders, not "oh look he/she is slow" lol but I mean about keeping up, knowing the way and feeling a part of the group as everyone else.

It's not all about going flat out everywhere.

always ride for your self if you are not comfortable at a certain speed to fast or to slow then arrange some meeting points or let your partner pull away and wait for you to catch up

Ride as fast as *you* feel comfortable with. Pushing yourself is fine if thats something you're comfortable with, but if you are going faster than you're happy doing then it is likely that the added speed/pressure will a)make you enjoy the ride less, and b)possibly cause a moments indecision at a crucial time, meaning a splat.

Hi
Ride at your own pace like korn said. If he wants to ride that fast he will have to wait for you. Making someone rider faster than they are comfortable with is a big no no Tut Tut .

Oh and yams not everyone has to ride at the slowest pace. All you do i wait for the slow people at the next junctions.

To be fair, I wouldn't have said that 20mph over the limit is exactly slow - would you?!

My Signature at the bottom sums it up for me. Everyone has different abilities, and if you allow yourself to get sucked in and ride faster than you feel comfortable with, as sure as eggs are eggs something will and does invariably happen.

Andy should have respect for you and your riding. Riding is about enjoying it, its dangerous enough without going beyond YOUR comfort level. I have 2 kids myself, and I know the maternal instinct is strong, self preservation and all that!

YamsR6 is right. I know I held him back, but thats not the point. I went to my (and my bikes) limits Smile and I enjoyed it.

When we ride out, I am the slowest rider, and everyone respects that. I am never pressurised to go faster / harder than I want to. If they want to go faster, thats up to them. I dont and wont go faster that I want. Be safe.

maybey just take things a bit slower when you ride, to slow down the pace down a bit.

think that bit more, take enough time to do all your checks, lifesavers etc.

sometimes you can get locked into riding quickely ie, quick gearchanges, throttle positioning. You dont realise that you can still make very good progress but you can slow/smoothen your controlls down, and as a result you will find you ride more accurat. smoothness can also help in this situation.

i like going a bit mad ever so often(who doesnt), but sometimes it is nice to slow the controls down, slghtly lessen the pace, smooth out and PLAN you actions well. as i say you can still make good progress while doing so. it is also rewarding, but in a different kind of way.

im not judging you or your riding btw, and im not sure if you find my bantings usefull, but there you have it.

just make sure you arent sucked into doing something you dont want to.

Thumbs Up

He's just going to have to be patient, if he thinks that you are slowing him down then you'll just have to set off 10 minutes earlier.

I used to go out with my wife on her restricted NSR and I was on the Blade. Sometimes it was painful but she appreciated it as I sort of ran shotgun for her whilst she was learning. I didn't expect her to speed past what she was comfortable with and I was more than capable of taking it easy once in a while.

I know what you mean about having a child too, although mine is yet to be born. I do think about wanting to be around long enough to see him grow up and I'm sure that's been reflected in the way I ride.

Never try to keep up with others for the sake of it. I'd rather be slow and still alive than push myself to the limit.

Do what feels safe for you Thumbs Up

Ride at a speed where YOU are comfortable. If Andy wants to ride with you then he will. If he wants to go for a blast so be it - just make sure he remembers to stop somewhere and wait for you. Or he could drop back and then power it on to catch up with you.

If you take it that if there is a turn off, he should wait there for you - otherwise you know to just continue going straight. Chances are he'll get bored hooning off all the time - most bikers like the company of other bikers - makes it more fun.

Never EVER ride outside of your comfort zone. Take it steady - enjoy it - afterall biking is ultimately about enjoyment - not how fast you can get from A to B (or at least it should be)

I find the key to not feeling pressured when riding in a group is to make sure that you know where they're going.

If you know, you can drop back safe in the knowledge that you're not going to get lost and if nobody stops to wait for you, it's no big deal.

Exactly, while siting on the motorway the two i was rideing up to the lakes with decided to filter down the middle of the traffic, not sure how they thought i was going to follow them with all the stuff i had on the bike at the time! if i had been following them i'd have been in some seroius ****!

I only ride up to the speed limit, people i ride with reguarly do the same, not everyones licence is expendable, if i loose my licence (which being nabed for speeding two times will do) i will have to catch the bus everywhere, that is simply not happening.

What he said.

If I'm going for a 'ride' for the sake of it, rather than riding to a place in a group purely for the purpose of getting there, then I'll ride to enjoy it.

No point in having the bikes in the first place if you're not... might as well just be sat in a car in comfort.

Also, what bendy said. When riding with slower BCF people with me leading I will usually go by the rule that I'll stop at any junctions if I've got ahead of others, but I aint spending £15 on fuel and oil for a days riding to do what I could do in a car.
In the same way I wouldn't want someone else to not enjoy the ride because they always feel they are trying to keep up.

Hi

Another vote here for riding at your own pace. Even if that means Andy has to do a few laps of the roundabouts waiting for you to catch up.

Going slower than you really want might not be that great, but it is better than being pressurised into going faster than you want.

All the best

Keith
