I've borrowed a battery charger off my Brother because (in his words) "it's shit, it puts fuck all out"
it's rated at 4 amps, will this be too much for the battery on my Chinese GN125 clone? the battery was new 4 months ago, but the bike was stood outside for 4 weeks before the MOT on Monday.

4amps might be OK, don't leave it too long though.
The battery probably states on the side 1 amp max so if it blows up it is your fault.

I'll try it, just wondering if daisychaining it off a car battery and charging both will stop it getting too much juice. Thinking

Personally I'd buy a suitable battery charger https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yuasa-Yu-Power-Battery-Charger-Connector-Lead-for-Motorcycles-Golf-Mobility-/261150799684?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3ccdccf744

its cheaper than a new battery

I'd like to, but between repairing the damage my ex did, and the MOT I'm skint.
Battery says 4AH on it, so I've set the timer on my phone for an hour. Thumbs Up

The 4AH on you battery is the output value, not a charge limit.

It means that your battery can give out 4 Amps for 1 Hour, or 1 Amp for 4 Hours, or any multiple of.

The charger is rated at 4A as this is the maximum it will charge to, NOT an absolute output value.

If the battery only needs a trickle topup charge and takes 1A, then this is all the charger will supply.

Batteries are designed to be trickle charged at a few amps, any more than that for a sustained time will result in warping of the plates and killing the battery.

If the battery is totally dead, a 4A charger should get it back to full power over night, but no need to worry about over charging as if the battery is full before you wake up, it should not do anything untoward.

If you are wanting to leave the thing on charge all the time and use your bike after a long break, then the poster who suggested a timer would be on the right lines, put it on to do a topup charge fro about half an hour each night, or even once a week for an hour, just to keep it ok, as this is basically what your alternator does when running the bike anyway.

Hope this helps

Mike

Dont charge at a rate higher than ten percent of the rated capacity, so a 4 amp hour battery would need only 400 ma for a slow charge, for a fast or boost charge, up to 30% is ok for a short period of time, in general car chargers, cheap ones only have overload protection, no limit on voltage and will boil your battery.

Use a multimeter to monitor the batterys charge level. Charge the battery till the voltage gets to 14.4v.
