Just did an oil and filter change on the Virago.
Upon re tightening the 3 bolts which secure the cover over the oil filter, one of them (the longest one) wouldnt tighten. Im confident i didnt overtighten the thread, the 2 other bolts were slightly tighter with the threads intact.

So i removed the bolt and on the thread itself there is a metal coil type peice about 5mm long on the tip of the thread, i dont know if it was thread from the casing itself or if its the remains of a previous repair to the thread in the engine.
So now something needs to be done otherwise im fairly sure its going to leak oil. What are my options?

You have stripped the thread, needs a helicoil.

Just been reading the bolt in question is a common one to mess up. Is a helicoil an easy procedure? Might take to a garage for it. Im assuming the filter cover will have to come off, which also means all that new oil drained and replaced as well?

They are a piece of piss to do, just drain the oil into a container and put it back in the bike when you are done.

Ok thanks is there a particular retailer best to buy the kit from?
The bolt in question is here:

https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv535a-virago-1990_model9652/partslist/B-01.html#results

Part number 5, but it doesnt say what size the thread is so i need to find that out before ordering the kit.

the best are time-sert or keensert type inserts, rather than the coil type, re-coil, heli-coil etc

True but imo not worth the £100+ price tag, helicoils are supposedly easy
