A friend of mine's CBR125 has been suffering issues as of late.

Fluctuating idle speeds and bogging down whilst riding. It started happening when the cold weather set in. He presumed it to be down to carb icing, I told him that it shouldn't be that.

I enquired as to whether this still happens with a hot engine, it does.

Quote from him on FB...
Quote:
Trouble starting. Put on choke. leave for about 5. choke off, sometimes it cuts out sometimes it dont. If i come to a stop and pull in clutch it will go to idle and then cut off and then I have trouble starting it
tried without choke too

I ask about performance whilst riding:
Quote:
Little bit sluggish. Like sometimes when I open the throttle it will sorta jump along

I ask if the symptoms are the same with the engine fully warmed up:
Quote:
yh
Like by time I get to mine from work it still cuts off
Only started after the service and when temperature dropped

Has been serviced very recently, a week or two ago tops. Before the problem started.

Just had a text from him saying that he's broken down. I can't go and help him tonight as I've been drinking. I asked him what happened, he said:
Quote:
Completely cut out again. Tried to start. Sometimes it would idle for a bit then cut off. Sometimes it wouldn't. When I was going along if I opened the throttle it the revs went up then down and kept going down then it cut off

I'm thinking that it's a carb related issue or a spark plug related issue. The plugs were changed during the service. I think he's going to check the bike tonight, but if he doesn't sort it then I'll pop over to try and give him a hand. I have ridden the bike and it felt/sounded mechanically sound the last time I heard/sat on it.

Can anyone offer any insight as to potential causes?

Hi,

Would I be right in reading that this only started after he'd had the bike serviced? If so, I'd be handing back to the dealer and tell them to sort it.

Otherwise: many years ago, a friend had running probs - took bike to dealer, dealer finds owners' cleaning cloth obstructing the intake to the airbox Embarassed

Might be worth checking that first.

If no good, first thought would be a fuel starvation problem, though that would suggest float height, something that isn't part of routine service. Could be obstructed jets, but odd if the problem has suddenly appeared.

Is the air filter element in place/unobstructed?

Could also be an air leak on induction side. Also check for partially blocked fuel tap, or tank not venting properly (causing air lock).

Yes, recently serviced. Although I'm doubting that it's a service item that has gone wrong.

There has been slight gunk blocking one of the airbox holes which we've now cleaned out. Carbs stripped & cleaned.

All assembled again and we tried to check for a spark. Me holding the HT lead and forgetting to ground the plug against the frame... got a nice shock Laughing Spark present on the plug.

Put the plug back in, noticed a spark against the HT Lead and the engine block when trying to start it. Have wrapped the problem area in some electrical tape now to see whether that improves things a bit.

We flattened the battery trying to start it so that's on charge now. CBR125s are a pain to start when the carbs are empty of fuel Sad

HT lead and cap are a known issue on early CBR125s. Has it been changed since new? For the sake of £15 it would be worth it just to rule it out.

06 model CBR. My mate says he doesn't think that the leads have ever been changed since new.

Battery is still on charge at the moment.

Is there anyway to prime the bik so that it starts easily for the first run?

You know in my cbr thread not long ago, do you think it could be the same for me?

Cheers.

It's very bad. Touched the plastic cap whilst the engine was running and got quite a shock Laughing Momentary bodge job has been to wrap the entire thing in electrical tape and he's going to replace it I think. Smile

Haven't a clue mate, you provide very little information in your thread to try and get a picture of what's wrong. If you post a more descriptive post with multimeter readings then we may be able to help some more.
