Hello guys and girls.

I'm having a little trouble with my ignition lock (2002 Honda Hornet CB600).

The problem is thus: if I put the key in and turn ignition on thats fine.. but if I then turn it off and try and put it into steering lock, it won't budge to the left, and then I can't even turn the ignition back on.

I have to wiggle the key about a lot, pulling it upwards and trying to turn. It just won't go left or right. Eventually after playing for a few goes it then turns ignition back on, but *same problem*, it won't go to steering lock and I'm back to square 1.

I've tried spraying some 3 in 1 lube in there, no joy..

It seems the problem is when I push 'down' to get to steering lock.. that's when it refuses to turn either way. Is it a case of a 10 year old lock having it's final moments before dying? Quite expensive for a new set (£200ish)...

Anyone have any ideas? This has only been happening for a few days now!

I had the same problem with my Kwak. I rammed loads of lithium grease into the slot which fixed it.

Lithium grease you say? Will purchase and try some of that tomorrow, thanks Hetzer.

I suspect any other grease would do just as well. I used lithium because it was the pot I found first.

Ditto recently on mine.

Cured it with aerosol grease with a tube on.

Put the key in a little bit so it makes a gap in the lock gate. Spray and repeat, spray and repeat. Do the same over a couple of days.

If you can twist the flexible tube and try to get some into the actual locking bar at the bottom of the lock. The moving bit that goes into the 'keep' on the frame headstock and stops the yokes being moved when locked.

Ok cool - so grease may be the answer then.

I've never actually seen where the locking bar is for the steering lock, will have a looksie tomorrow. Cheers!

It's not overly obvious. But it exists I can assure you. Smile

They are deliberately out of the way and not easily accessible to make it more difficult for 'poor-sweet-innocent-neglected-by-society-Duane-chav.' to get at. Evil or Very Mad

Ha, this is awkward.

After all the lube I sprayed in there last night (behave, you lot), it has loosened it all up and working fine now!

Cheers for all the help, usually the simplest of solutions we try - but didn't want to chance a more serious problem!!

I'd still pack lots of grease in there, otherwise it'll all dry out and start acting up again.

Try some Ambersil Graphite Lock Lube, it works wonders and is designed for the job. It was about £3 from Maplins last time I had some.
