Hi All,

I have a small issue with my bike, as I am sure most of you are aware if you turn on some of the newer bikes they do a self diagnostics run, making like a clicking and buzzing noise. Only on my ER-6F the bike makes this noise but quieter even when the electrics are off and the immobiliser is on (and when its off). The noise comes from the tank area, can anyone tell me what this is? I am planning on taking into shop if noone has seen this before.

This noise is made for around 10 seconds every few minute or so.

Thanks

A slight buzzing for a few seconds every now and then? It is almost certainly petrol vapour escaping from the tank cap seal. The cap is designed to let the vapour out, otherwise pressure would build up when it's hot out. Much more frequent when it's a sunny day, or the engine is hot.

Really? I took the bike out of the garage this morning and it was doing it almost instantly. Could it still be this?

It's the bomb that's connected to the immobiliser arming itself.

If someone tries to hot wire your bike. BOOM.

I wouldn't expect vapour escaping to make a buzzing noise.....sounds like it would be a fuel pump, but this would only prime when you turn the key.

Why would it be designed to do that??

apparently it has something to do with the fuel injection system, I have noticed a fair few posts on several forums regarding this noise.

It makes a kind of high-pitched buzzing noise on my ER6. A bit like a mosquito near your ear, only louder, and coming from the tank cap area. If I'm working on the bike in the summer, it happens frequently.

I think you're that's referring to the noise when you turn the ignition to on; a kind of whirring for ~1 second. I believe that's the fuel pump.

apparently the pump does not need the ignition switched on with this model, thats what others have told me anyway which has to do with keeping the injectors at constant pressure. I could be wrong but it makes sense in a way.

so the fuel pump primes itself, even when the bike is off? Sounds like you've got a serious fire hazard in the event of a fuel leak... Shocked

I think moonzoomer is mistaken, without authoritative references to back him up. The buzzing doesn't sound anything like the ignition on noise. It's quieter and far higher pitched.

It's the expansion/contraction of the fuel in the tank with air escaping via the filler..........mine does it all the time !.

Crap, so what happens if you have an empty tank, the pump buzzes away until it self destructs?

There are two coil units under the tank, airbox etc. On top of the spark plugs. You may be hearing the current in the coils units. Like a high pitched capacitor whine. Sounds like Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELKDYLReulI

....eeeeeeeeeeE.... and so on and so forth.

The fuel pump only whirrs and clicks for about a second until it primes the injectors then switches off.

The intermittent whirr-click is just the pump topping up pressure in the injectors as the fuel will slowly leak off. Normal.
