PostPosted: 14:50 - 08 Feb 2013    Post subject: Insurance Renewal Reply with quote

Just been on the phone with insurers, as my insurance is up for renewal.

I have two unsettled, ongoing claims. Both pretty much unlucky, and both times riding sensibly and within the law (that'll teach me).

First time some idiot tried to turn right, across the front of me, when his lane only allowed for turning left (obviously lost), and the second time some idiot coming the other way turned across the front of me to take a junction on my left (his right).

Both of these are disputing liability (why tell the truth when you can lie eh? Obviously afraid of increased premiums).

I was looking at £70 a month, which I was happy with for three years no claims bonus in the area I live in. The guy on the phone put me on hold, and went away, came back saying:

As your claims aren't settled yet, we have to put them as fault claims, and as such you will lose your no claims bonus until fault is settled. So from £70 a month, it's now £178 a month. I can't afford that. (Guilty until proven innocent, they are a law unto themselves).

To make matters worse, I'm supposed to be starting a job soon that is 10 miles away - going to have to turn that down now in light of this.

Any advice on what to do?

Store the GSXR and get a more insurance friendly bike for now.

Unfortunately 'unsettled' can actually be worse than 'fault' often - as their could be all sorts on the way.
And that's before the no claims bonus comes in to play.

It's worth looking at if you can then claim for any of the problems that have arisen from this situation. Not sure what is allowed, but it can really mess you up obviously.

I kinda fancy a job I'd have to cycle ten miles a day to as it'd force me to get fitter Smile. And I've found compared to a car, I can often cycle as quickly or quicker through town (ie centre of Bradford to other side of Saltaire and I was quicker than cars in the same traffic at 4pm on a Sunday.)

If I could afford another bike I'd just pay the premium.

Just called up the independent broker down the road.

They've done me a quote for 0 years no claims, 2 pending quotes, and it's CHEAPER than the quote Swinton offered me WITH the no claims!

I'll be marching down there and taking this out ASAP.

Have you done a quote on a comparison site?

If not - do so.

But, use fake contact details so they don't spam you and sell your information.

Cheapest was £1500 on comparison website.

I'll be taking out the policy down the road when the time comes. When I finally get my no claims back, it'll be around the £300 mark. That'll do for me!

Coolio. Be sure to get a comparative quote with your full No Claims and no faults, and tack the difference onto your compo because they unreasonably contested blame.

You don't ask, you don't get.

This is exactly what I'm going through at the moment. Unsettled claim put my premium from £400 a year to £1400.

If insurance wasn't so expensive, and it didn't go up so much from a claim, maybe people would be more honest about whether it was their fault or not.

Same with theft claims and the like, you are legally obliged to pay for something, yet are reluctant to use it because you know how it will fuck you over the next year.

Insurance is going up and up each year, I find it disgraceful that they can charge so much for something that's a legal requirement to use your vehicle. There should be a cap on this nonsense.

My friend who had been driving for years with no claims and a full no claims bonus had some idiot crash into the side of him, but the other party had "dodgy" witnesses shall we say... he now can't get a quote less than 3k - and they wanted the balance of the premium paying up front afterwards.

He felt like asking for his previous 20+ years insurance money back due to never claiming. Licence to print money...

Knowing nothing about your job offer I'm obviously speculating hugely here, but is this new job in the middle of the Yorkshire dales? It's just that there are these things called peasant wagons (aka a bus).
Hopefully you've sorted the insurance by now but couldn't you take public transport to work rather than stand in the dole queu(another outrages speculation)?

Oh and insurance is the devil

Huge speculation on your part. Shift work involving nights. Also I'd rather crawl to work then get on the peasant wagons with the rest of the filth.

Reality is the cheaper companies at least don't make much on the actual insurance I believe - if there was a cap, there'd end up making a loss on the insurance.

They do make money on selling claims against other companies to claims management places that then over-inflate them.

I just phoned up to cancel my renewal as it as 200 pounds more expensive than the other quotes I got, the guy on the phone obviously wanted to keep my business to offered to 'see what they could do' I decided to give it a shot at least.

Not only was it still loads more expensive, they wanted MORE money for last years policy due to an address change I hadn't got round to informing them of! That phone call was going to cost me an extra 90 quid!

Told him to fuck off of course and make sure he cancels me. I'll probably get blacklisted now because my card details are out of date to them and they can't charge me anyway.
