noticed a black box with 2 wires, one goes to the battery other has a small 2 pin plug on the end.

switch on the side of the box turning it on makes a pretty green light come on..

any ideas?

It's near enough the same switch as I've got for my heated grips, only on mine if the switch is down it's for low heat with a green light (as on yours), switch up for high heat with a red light or switch centre for off - and, yep, you've guessed it - in this position there is no light!

Keep it. If ever a pair of Oxford Wrap-Around grips come up for auction on eBay, with no switch - you're laughing BTW, it should have three wires - one to the battery and one each for the grips.
