(No this isn’t going to be a bike Top Gear thread and no this isn’t an “I’m in university, help me with my final year project” thing either!)

I’ve been thinking lately that I wouldn’t mind trying to make a programme about motorbikes based in the UK. Not at all aiming for TV broadcast or anything like that, just a simple youtube/internet thing but definitely not a motovlogger thing either. Aiming I suppose for around 10 minutes an episode but could go longer or shorter if needed. I guess the best way to describe it would be a UK version of RideApart (just without a TT racer presenter – Well, not unless there’s an out of work TT presenter on here with a lot of spare time Laughing).

I am actually a final year uni student studying Professional Broadcast Techniques (I already have all my projects sorted, don’t worry!) so I’m pretty happy that I can take care of all the camera and editing work and I have a few ideas of things that could be put into a programme but I was hoping for some suggestions of things everyone else would like to see in a programme like this. Obviously there is zero budget so doing stuff like transcontinental trips on the latest adventure bikes is out of the question, as is anything that involves buying a bike for specific features. As there will be no obvious advantage to bike manufacturers (initially anyway) I highly doubt they’d be interested in giving free or sample products so reviewing the latest and greatest anything is also out of the question unless someone wants to donate their brand new bike for the cause Laughing

Some of my ideas included:

Arrow Getting an owner to review a bike that they’ve had for a few years. I always thought that reviewing a brand new bike was never going to give you a full picture of what it’s like. Getting people who’ve owned bikes for a while will give a better picture of what it’s like to own and ride in several different riding situations and also in terms of reliability and popular mods.

Arrow Trackday experience. Going to a trackday and basically showing what it’s like. Interview first time riders in the novice group as well as the experienced guys in the fast group, show the atmosphere in the pits, maybe talk to a few organisers etc etc

Arrow Restoration projects. Follow some restorations of interesting/old/rare bikes.

Arrow Off road stuff – Maybe do something on greenlaning, how accessible it is, how much/little you need to do it and have fun. I love off road bikes but don’t have one myself so need a bit of help with this bit.

I want to stay away from tips and tricks, riding/mechanical tutorials and all that stuff and I definitely don’t want it to be like a motovlog thing. I don’t want to end up reviewing brand new bikes either as there’s plenty of other places that have all that stuff covered. The general idea I’d be trying to convey would be fun with bikes and hopefully showing the general public that they are accessible, fun and useful for a lot of people and not the kitten slaying demon transport of death that some people think they are.

I’d be doing it in my spare time so I doubt it’d be a weekly thing and as I said before there’d be zero budget so it can’t cost anything as I don’t have anything to spend.

So, any ideas?

Sounds like something I would watch. Not too focused on old-man bikes, shiny chrome, decals and crap like that, not too focused on how to make it rev up to 10,000 0.001 seconds faster...go for it mate Thumbs Up

Won't happen as I don't have regular access to celebrities, a track or a CG125.

Review old bikes, please. Can't stand all these reviews on brand new bikes. What about us 90% who buy 5-10 year old bikes?

Some sort of group test style things along the same lines as above would be good, if possible.

Oh and just make sure you're a better camera man than the MCN lot. Their videos are awful really, just awful.

Yeah I'd be doing something like that, popular second hand bikes or bikes that aren't always a 600/1000cc sports. Reviewed preferably by someone who's owned it for a bit so could advise on popular mods or common problems etc

I'll have a look through the MCN videos, thanks Thumbs Up

A slug would be a better cameraman than whoever works for MCN.

First review, CB-1 vs CBF500, which is better for commuting?

high revving 1989 Jap import vs 2006 newish commuter bike with same power output. What's better for commuting/pillion/long distance. CBF500's are normally about double the price, but do you get double the bike???

Sounds like a sweet idea. please go for it!

It's a shame, because they have all the resources for something great.

If this went ahead, I'm sure you have no shortage of volunteers for people to help/show their bikes to the world.

And get a proper microphone. MCN vids pick up a bit lately in terms of vid, but their sound is still horrendous.

I had a good look through the MCN videos last night - "research"... To be honest, the interviews were fine and as long as they were inside then the audio was fine too. They seemed to really struggle outside though and whoever does the outside stuff has seemingly never heard of mic wind shields or tripods. The guy who presents the off road stuff is a bit emotionless and boring to watch/listen to and makes me realise that the people presenting need to be good or it'll just die in the first few episodes.

I can't say that my stuff is going to be any better or worse than the MCN videos but I definitely won't be covering all the first ride stuff or brand new bike shoot outs. I'm still learning and I'm always making mistakes but it's something I'm interested in doing with no professional broadcast aspirations or anything, just a hobby more than anything.

Feel free to come and help out if you do find yourself with some time!

Stuff like this would be great but I'd be relying on existing owners to come forward and volunteer themselves and their bikes as I won't have any pull with bike shops or dealers as a non-established video guy working out of his bedroom. Definitely going along the right track though!

Nice try Wink I'd probably just make a post in the track days and racing forum and see if there's anyone going to a track day near me (anything Northwest/North Wales) and tag along basically. Try and get hold of the organisers beforehand and maybe get some mini interviews going etc.

No worries, that's basically what I want to make! Wouldn't mind being in California either but I guess Manchester will have to do for now Laughing

To one and all - if you have any interest in appearing on something like this then please get in touch - PM or whatever! I'm based in Manchester but quite often visit family in North Wales too so get around the North West a fair bit. I currently have one feature planned but it won't be shot until late March at the earliest (uni project) so if anyone wants to do anything or thinks they have an interesting bike or story to show and tell then please do drop me a line Thumbs Up

Thanks for the votes of confidence, good to know that at least five of you would watch it Laughing
