my zx6r 97 is driving my mad now.

i had a recent problem with it not getting any fuel, turned out i needed a fuel pump repair kit.

thats all sorted now, my new problem is now when it runs it is misfiring heavily and also throws in some very loud backfiring and popping from the exhaust mainly when reving it as it wont idle on its own.

note the bike ran perfectly fine before the fuel pump packed in.

only other things i had done when it first stopped was changed the spark plugs and air filter.
i have checked the plugs and all are sparking as they should, checked all the leads on each individual plug and nothing seems out of order.
also the carbs were run dry originaly when the fuel filter fault happened.

so i ask could a dirty carb cause backfiring? if not then any other suggestions?

cheers

Sync'd the carbs up properly recently? Might be worth a look mate

Edit - dirty carbs = bad running. Simplest step is to check carb sync if you've got the tools, then messing about dismantling n cleaning ect.

Carbs avnt been synced whilst I've had it but since the problem started it has been stood for around 2 month as gettin time off has been difficult.

I'm gonna strip carb off tonight anyways and hopefully will find something blocked.

1 thing I haven't checked is the actual fuel flow, I can't see any obvious way of priming the system , is there a trick to it?

Cheers

Are you sure you have the HT leads on the correct plugs?

Hi, I'm fairly sure the leads are the correct way around. What sort of volts should I expect roughly on the leads as il borrow a multi metre tomorrow and jam it down them!

In the mean time il try and find a picture of a engine to check the leads position

Don’t use a DMM on the end of a HT lead to check for volts it will hurt and break your meter.

You should only check the resistance on the output of the coils.

Hi sorry for the slow update but I'm still fighting with it!

I had the carb off, cleaned it all out , put it back together.

It now seems I'm getting no fuel, I bypassed the tank and tap by rigging one up, the pump seems to get power (sometimes) when i flick on the ignition but not all the time and nothing when turning over,
I tested it with a spare relay.
Is there anything else that can cause intermitant power to the pump? Does the cdi get involved?
( already had a pump kit fitted)

Doing my head In now as I rarely get chance to look at it like its taken me almost 2 weeks to take the carb off, clean them and put them back on!
