Might be moving house to somewhere with no garage, so I'll be looking to chain my bike up with a big fat chain.

So what do I chain it up to?

Are there "suggested" steel hoop brackets or something?

Your car tow eye if you have one. Drain in the gutter. Lampost. Rent a lockup or find local biker and chain bikes togeather.

If permission allows (or you're the owner) then bolting or concreting in a ground anchor is preferable.

If that isn't possible (I rebar-ed and concreted a massive D-shackle that had been welded shut into my drive) one of the things that comes up on here is to make a big lump of concrete which is heavy and not very portable with an anchor point to chain you bike too.

I have seen a bike parked infront of a car (presumably their own) and it being chained to the car, couldn't see what it was chained to however the chain went underneath the car.

Ground anchor / wall anchor set in floor or wall. BIG plant pot filled with bricks, concrete, reinforcement and with a ground anchor set in the concrete and reinforcement. Chain to a lamp post or any hefty railings / benches near by? Can you rent a private garage or council / housing association garage nearby?

Tie it to a really long piece of rope and tie the rope to your leg, so if it get's pulled you'll know someone is robbing your bike from the comfort of your own home.

No thanks necessary Thumbs Up

I screwed an Oxford Brute Force ground anchor to the wall, about 8" from the floor and it works a treat. Costs about £20 with fixings, but I picked it up on eBay for £12 new. You want to think about where you'll be putting the chain on the bike when deciding where to fit a wall/ground anchor. The best place is through the swing arm. For me due to the tight space outside I have to put it through the rear wheel, which isn't ideal as it can obv be removed easily. Having said that though, any thief worth his salt is more likely to just cut the chain. When I'm away for any extended length of time I also use a motion sensitive alarmed disc lock on the front wheel. Along with the bikes motion sensitive alarm and a decent outdoor cover over the bike, there's not a whole lot else that can be done security wise.

Find someone who's just paid £4400 for a new YZF-R125 and chain it to them. You won't find anything denser. Thumbs Up

At the moment mine isn't locked to anything, disc lock and another lock though the rear wheel. I will be getting a ground anchor soon though.

I cant see you having bother owning a gold teapot. My bike is worth less than yours, all i use is an shitty Oxford chain through the rear wheel. As long as its good enough to keep the kids from joyriding it. If your bike has no great value you are not going to get two guys chucking it into the back of a van.

The problem with leaving it chained to a lampost you need to make sure that space will still be there when you get home.

Get down to B&Q and buy a gorilla bucket, 3 bags of ballast and 1 cement. and get yourself a stout chain or a large loop of heavy steel like a mooring ring or heavy shackle. I would use 40-50mm rebar but I can get that easily.

Dig a hole and drop in a gorilla bucket, fill in around hole so the sides press in a bit then throw in a loop of the chain from the middle, mix up your ballast & cement with water and fill the bucket with it. You'll now have a 100kg anchor with chain/fixing point attached that won't pull out of the ground easily but can be dug out and removed if you have to put the garden right.

I've found having such a hideous bike that kids run past the drive screaming if they see it is helpful... I don't even need to bother chaining it up (or removing the keys from the ignition for that matter).

If you can't dig anything up or find anything solid enough, get an old dustbin (or an old oil drum would be better) and fill it with concrete, put the metal loop in that... it will be enough of a deterrent for most thiefs

Seriously, chain it to a second bike, it's what I do. Your own movable ground anchor.

or buy a push bike D lock and a couple of bags of postcrete, shove the D lock into the wet postcrete until only a few inches of the curved bit stick out, wait until the postcrete sets and Bob's your Mother's Brother!
D locks are a fiver in Tesco, no horse jokes though. Laughing
