Basically the above. I'm going to list things I've done and how this affected it. Initially would barely rev without wanting to die. ALWAYS idles and idles fine. Needed easy start to get started and then copious amounts until it had warmed up.

1) Spark plug, whipped off and was wet black and very manky/corroded.
Replaced, much better, kicked first time, would take forever (especially when cold), now kicks first time all the time.
2) Removed and cleaned throttle valve/plunger/needle. Sprayed with carb cleaner everywhere possible.
Not much change, as expected took a while to run up and back to above. Otherwise no change.
3) Did the same with auto choke and checked it was working, it is.
4) Ran engine with a bit of gravity fed fresh fuel, to check if fuel was bad, no change.
5) Changed the battery, this made the biggest improvement, old one was really done for. Had been on an optimate but was still gone. Electric start working too (obviously).
Revs much better, and we could run it up and down. Took it round the block and initially started to go, then could only hold 10mph and nothing more. Also smokes a lot.
Because of the smoking I removed the vacuum feed to the oil pump briefly to see if it was getting too much oil (clutching at straws) only ran briefly but seemed much better and smoke was gone even when revved. Only did that for 30 seconds and re-connected.
6) Checked oil in tank and filter, oil coming out was very similar to the oil in the bottle which is proper 2 stroke oil.

Need help as it's the S-I-L scooter and she doesn't have much money, I've already bought the battery and helping out where I can. Two-stroke engines I don't fully understand despite the reading/re-reading/reading whilst upside down on Wikipedia.

Has it been running normally up to date or is this a new project?

Sounds like it's down on compression/suction if it's addicted to eZ start.

A smoker that has been sat for a long time, won't rev, is down on compression but idles ok and seems to be burning a lot of oil. I'd be suspicious about the crank seals.

It's been sat since August when it was running fine. It sounds spot on at idle and will rev and has got better.

EZ Start was whilst the plug was shot, I didn't realise at the time as I didn't have a 21mm spark socket so continued without checking. As soon as I changed this it was perfect. Feels like there is plenty of compression on the kick and it starts easily now.

Only thing I've not done is drained the float bowl (they do have one don't they Embarassed sorry the 2T lack of knowledge again) and blasted back trhough that way. I don't really want to have to take all that apart if I can avoid it.

Could be the exhaust pipe clogged up with carbon, there are some cleaning guides on here somewhere.

I was going to look at that (for curiosity if nothing else), but as it happens I've fixed it.

Just needed the usual, float bowl off, clean everything with carb cleaner. Re-assembled and it was off like a rocket.

She said it's better than it's ever been, but I think part of that was the spark plug which was seriously corroded and nasty. Smoking stopped after all, obviously a little bit every now and again but not nearly as much at all.

Front brake is sticking, but it's in my garage now as it's going to have the caliper stripped and cleaned. Job for tomorrow.
