Anyone own one? Which one did you get?

Looking at one on ebay for cleaning carbs, is this a real proposition and what else do I need? I was looking at the so-called 'professional' ones. £80+ depending on size.

Having cleaned up two carbs in the last couple of weeks and I potentially have to do another this weekend I'd like to do a better job. The wife is into DIY Jewelery so it would get more use than for the above.

Something like this

I don't know if they have improved but the ones we used to use when I worked at a jewelers years and years ago were shite. Took hours to do anything, you could get a better result using a polishing cloth in about 30 seconds.

That was 15 years ago mind Smile

I've looked at a few youtube videos and also read some Amazon reviews, a couple in there from people rejuvenating carbs. One guy with an MG and another with a Honda carb. Both say did the job. A couple of the videos I saw, which seemed genuine, seemed to show even cheaper ones than I was looking at doing a good job. But I want one that will hold a decent sized carb.

That looks a lot like the one I've got, only mine doesn't have the digital display, just a couple of rotary knobs, time, temperature and an on/off switch. Box looks identical.

I've used it for cleaning up a generator carburettor, and various bicycle bits, stainless steel watch strap.
Doesn't get used often, but it seems to work pretty well.

How long does it take and what liquid do you put in there?

I bought one from Maplins for my fiancee's engagement ring, not quite on the same level as the one you posted.
https://www.maplin.co.uk/ultra-7000-ultrasonic-cleaner-223108
That one was cheaper around Xmas ^^, I paid £30.

I find it does a good job of loosening the crap, but it still requires a bit of brushing etc to actually remove it. I have used a range of solvents, water, soapy water, diet cola, paraffin etc.

I have cleaned pretty much everything in it; rings, keys, fountain pens, coins, watches, parts of the coffee machine, bike parts etc etc etc. Does an ok job but generally it still requires a bit of brushing. It wont remove tarnish, just built up debris.

For carbs I suspect you'd want a half decent solvent if it was to have a chance at loosening anything.

Oddly I was just looking on Maplin website and found this

https://www.maplin.co.uk/professional-ultrasonic-cleaner-8050-h-261248

It being a bit bigger is what attracts me.

Indeed, for carb bits you'd want a slightly larger one. The one my OH has, has a bath about 5 cm deep, 15 cm wide and 17 cm long (estimate)

I bought one from Aldi (it was one their special offer days) last year, when I was fettling my Superdream, I think it was 20 quid.

It did a decent job of getting the crap out of the float bowls and I was able to get most of a brake caliper and mounting bracket in there; couple of bits needed two goes, but I thought it wasn't a bad buy for the money.

I didn't experiment with cleaning solutions, I just used warm water and a few drop of Jizer.

I did have to google that, I was a bit concerned by what you were suggesting .... Laughing

I've just got the wife to pick up the Maplin one, if I have any problems it can go back. I've got some other de-greaser in a tin I can't remember which one, may have been a comma one or similar. I've got a carb that is potentially for the bin so I might try a refurb. If I can get the float bowl screws off! Evil or Very Mad

I've used water and a dash of floor detergent to act as a surfactant.
I'll run it for say 30 minutes and have a look at whats happening, maybe change the water and run it again. It does tend to take the best part of an hour, but then it's not like you sit there watching it (alright, maybe the first time).
Might be better if you use proper solution, although I did some web searches and plenty of people just use water with some sort of surfactant.

Got it home. Tried it with some rings and not much happening.

Added a small amount of Distilled Vinegar, then dropped in my carb. Not a great fit, but wow it works just like the YouTube videos.

I'd get a bigger one, but otherwise seems good.

With a carb the bubbles and muck start rising almost instantly, by the end of 8 minutes (the longest cycle) it was very grey and murky in the tank. Lifted it out and the float bowl (which I'd split) looked super shiny inside. Jets all clean (again separated prior to their bath).

I would definitely suggest getting the biggest one you can afford, or likely you'll regret it later.

What size one did you get? I looked at videos of a 2.5L one and I doesn't seem as if I could fit a 1000cc bikes carb in it...

2.5L one I could get most of a 250cc carb in there, had to flip and do the other side again. Over 3/4 of it was in there.

I would look at the pro ones on ebay, some bigger ones to be had for good money.
