I have heard that you shouldnt use WD40 on a chain... is there any reason for this?

I remember using it on a bicycle chain years ago and use it on a lot of other motorcycle parts, but why is it seen as a no-no for chains?

I used to use Chain cleaner and chain lube but have recently resorted to using old engine old to lube the chain, but dont see what could be wrong with using WD40.

WD40 isn't a lubricant, it's a water dispersant. The solvents may damage the 'O' rings. It's completely unsuitable for the job.

Cleaning the chain, use paraffin or diesel.

Lubricating the chain use EP90 gear oil (miles better than engine oil, recommended by manufacturers, viscous enough not to fling and cheap as chips) or an aerosol chain lube.

WD40 would do no harm to the chain, but it'll dry out/evaporate soon and the chain would end up dry/with no lube on it.

I wouldn't assume that it does no damage - the 'O' rings might not handle it well.

WD40 came out quite alright, I guess. Anyway, get some proper chain lube, I use Valvoline white synthetic chain lube, not expensive, works quite well Thumbs Up

6.25GBP for the can and I got it 2 yrs ago and it's still not empty + the bike stays clean Smile

Well, I don't ride my motorcycle in rain/wet, so I don't need that much of it.
