Hi Folks,
I have a Aprilia RS125 99 Harada rep which I am having trouble starting the thing.

Basically the starter motor is not kicking in 95% of the time, every so often I will get a little kick out of it but not enough to start the bike. I have replaced the starter relay but that made no difference.
Any ideas?

Cheers
Conners

bump start it for now, then get a mechanic to look at it.. I'm near clueless with starters, but there must be something which engages and disengage it. this might be worn or simply broken.

Try taking the starter off, cleaning things up, lubricating and moving parts you can get at and put it back on. thats normally what i do when i'm clueless and it has a habbit of working Wink Laughing

I have been bumping the thing for the last two weeks waiting for the starter relay as me local (and only) Aprilia dealer thought that might be the problem.
Now i'm stuck and praying it ain't the motor thats gone.

Hi

Not sure if it is the same between the Rotax 122 engined and 123 engined bikes.

On the older 123 engine the starter motor has a chuck piece that is on a very coarse screw thread. When the starter motor spins the chuck goes down the thread , outwards until the teeth on it engage with the teeth on the flywheel.

I would suspect that the chuck is sticking on the coarse thread. If this is the case then you would probably hear a fast turning quiet noise from the starter motor (might not hear it with a helmet on).

Take off the r/h cover which goes over the fly wheel. At about the 7 o'clock position on the flywheel there is a plastic cover. Take this off and you will see the starter motor chuck. Clean it out and lube it up.

All the best

Keith

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the info, the only noise I am hearing is the starter relay clicking when I press the starter button.

Sounds like your start motor has packed in, get a volt meter out and see if any volts are getting to the starter motor. If it's getting volts but isn't turning then the starter needs replacing (£20 from breakers)
