As title says, i've been looking into naked bikes as they are some of the very few styles i really like the look of. I'm not in a rush to get one as i havnt used the 535 enough yet (shit summer, shit winter and now shit spring). Basically looking for:

Budget up to £2300 max
Does at least 45mpg
Cheap insurance (for example my 535 costs £220 a year thats with no no claims, so looking for similar regarding insurance costs)

Been looking at the Cb600. Totally new to this type of bike, and as i understand it, all of them after year 2000 are fuel injected right? Are there many differences regarding performance/reliability between carbs and FI?
Also, when doing valve clearances do most of these kind of bikes require shims as apposed to the locking nut/screwdriver job i'm used to?

Lastly i've looked at SV650's but very few of them are without the fairing at the front. I much prefer the round (cruiser style) headlight, like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-SV-650-/300723851716?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item460489d1c4

Are they easy enough to convert like that?
Thanks

Better off buying on nake rather than semi then converting.

CB600's are amazing bikes.

One of the best engines to work on imo. Pre 2003 have small tanks 16L and small wheel 16' front.

2006 > have FI

Sv's have more tourque. But for build qualtiy and reliabiltiy and genral uuser friendlyness id go for the hornet.

Remove fairing/clocks, replace clocks with dash unit and round headlamp. Job jobbed.

Youll need to watch out with the hornet if u are particularly broad at the shoulder and have large hands the bike is uncomfortably narrow for me

Set of renthals cures this imo. I not the smallest person and have found on long motorway missions, 8hours+ they tend to ache and the foot possition is also prone aching.

If you look at SV's then get one that was made as a naked, they have a different riding position to the S models with lower pegs as well as the higher handlebars. My SV650S averaged 62 mpg over 3K miles and they do sound nice with plenty of popping on over run between 3-4.5K and even recorded a high of 78mpg Shocked (that was granny riding though, on a charity ride I ended up marshaling the 125's... Nice relaxing day really)

Add the Street Triple to your test ride list, just because Thumbs Up

I have seen a lot said about Hornet's having a sub 100 mile tank range on here.

Ah so one like this then:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-Suzuki-SV-650-Y-Other-645cc-/271175262982?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3f234e2306

Though i did have a Suzuki GZ125 (2005) and i cant say i was that impressed with its build quality...
The CB to me looks and sounds better (based on youtube vids) and i'd imagine has better build quality too.
Street Triple seems to be over budget. Are there any other bikes to consider?

I got 68 miles on friday out of half a tank. Pushing hard the first 34 and sitting between 60 and 70 the way back because i wasnt sure of the remaining range and had left my card in the house. Dont find the foot pegs the worst bu the stock gap between the left peg and the clutch is tiny. The bike just seems like it was made for small people!

Reading between the lines, I think the OP wants something quite different in character to his 535 and I'm taking that to mean a revvier four.

As mentioned before the Renthals are a good idea. Post 2000 models aren't FI but this is no bad thing, the carbs fuel perfectly. What the >2000 on models do have is a 17" front wheel as opposed to the 16" on the 98-99 which limits tyre choice.

They are good bikes and could be what you're looking for. Fuel economy is fine, tank range is not. Regarding servicing, there are loads of Hornets and CBR600s around that have never even had their valves looked at with astronomical mileages. Don't worry about it.

Basically, any 600+ naked will be a revelation in the handling and braking department and if you can't afford a Striple a Hornet is a very good choice.

Thanks for the replies.
Regarding tank range, not an issue. I'm used to the 100 miles before flicking reserve on my current bike...any bike with a longer range than that is a bonus

I thought Hornet's became FI quite a bit later on than 2000. Wiki seems to suggest >2007 are FI.

The Hornet is a great bike, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them to be honest.

The hornets became FI in 2006 with the naked modle that styled the 'same' as the old. It round headling etc but with USD forks. Then they changed the whole style to the new sharp one.

2000> Had 17@ front and the 2003 > had bigger tank

I have always had 98 - 99, the 16inch isn't as bad as some say, just something to get used to. But tire choice is shit.

I got 120miles out of mine on motorways. round town i can avrage 100 if im lucky.

If im riding like i usually do its 70-80 before i hit reserve.

Whistle

And for what it's worth, I'm rather a broad shouldered sort, and I've never thought it too narrow a fit?

Nope. They went to a 17" front earlier than that. I have a 2001 (unmodified) that has a 17" front.

Was hoping for FI but if the carbs are good on the CB then thats alright as well.

Have you considered a CBF600? Old hornet "naked" shape with the new hornet "FI" rather than carb Wink

The Blandit does nothing for me unfortunately, it just reminds me of the 'toy bike' you got in a cracker/cereal box as a kid Laughing
