My work shift pattern has recently changed which means I can now attend my local evening bike meet every fortnight.
Anyway, on the way home the other night I decided to take the largly unlit country route home which made me realised something.
I'd never actually used the full beam switch before and I came to this conclusion in alarming fashion when I flicked the switch and the headlights turned OFF!
Not sure what's wrong, probably shit in the connections or something but after the shock wore off I switched back to dipped and laughed the rest of the way home.

It could just be that the main beam filament has blown; check the bulb.

Same here. Riding along a totally unlit road on a freezing December night at or around the national speed limit with the dipped beam on when suddenly..... pitch black. I can remember the sequence of thoughts now, as if it took ages (but probably less than a second).

"Oh."
"I know what's happened here. What's happened is I have suffered a dipped beam filament failure"
"It is dark, isn't it? I could do with more light than the sidelight is giving"
"Eureka!! The dipped beam filament may have failed but the main beam will still be ok!"
"How do you get main beam again?"
"Ah, yes...."
<click>
"That's better".

<starts thinking it over>

"Fuck me!!!"

FYI this is not very fun when you are stoned.

Once in my teens, I called my dad to come and pick me up from a mates party, still quite stoned and already paranoid because my dad was picking me up whilst stoned and he decided to flick the lights off down an unlit country road.

Cue me shitting my pants metaphorically and very nearly literally.

To this day he hasn't admitted to my face that he knew I was stoned but told my mum that he thought I was.

Funnily enough, never touched drugs again after that evening.

the worst one is when your going main to dipped, when you get to dipped your left with the dazzling oncoming headlight outlining the silhouette of the sheep that is crossing the road and get to wondering if there are any more animals crossing the road between you and that silhouette

Never understood why dipped beam goes out when full beam goes on.

Some bulbs (like H4) I can understand if it's to stop the bulb overheating from two filaments on.

But take for example a CBR with twin headlights. The dipped goes off when you put full beam on. Dipped only stays on if you use the "passing" lights or flash button.

Not sure why dipped can't stay on, surely if you're using full beam you want as much light as possible?

Hmmm, in my saxo, when normal dipped headlights are on and you go to put full beam on, both the normal lights AND full beam go on and then as soon as you ease the lever back for full beam the normal headlights go off.

Sometimes if it's a really dark lane I'll just hold main beam on that way I get both lights, I often wondered why this is.

And yes, it's a fucking french tin can turd! Thumbs Up

did that on my Corrado as well tomm, I believe they were H4 bulbs, like a lot of older vehicles. Makes me think its something to do with preventing the bulb from overheating.

But on my Focus it's got separate bulbs for full and dipped beam, and so they both stay on.

Just don't understand why on some bikes that have two headlights but only one is on for dipped that the dipped switches off when full beam is on.

Similar moment last Wednesday evening for me !
Left the weekly cafe meet up and headed home down some barely lit back roads when suddenly . . no lights. No dip and no main beam !

I crapped my pants if I'm honest. I just thank fk the flash switch was still working.

Rode the whole way back, including the M25 and A2 switching between no lights and full on. Think I dazzled a few drivers and suprised a few more by 'appearing' in their rear view. Lol.

Got home in one piece, no furries died so all good. Turned out to be crap in the main loom connector block to the nose cone.
Don't EVER want a repeat of that. Laughing
