I know I need to disconnect the battery in order to charge it without blowing the fuse in the bike,

What I'm unsure about is the fact the bike has an alarm on it (standard Kawasaki alarm that came fitted, bike is the ZZR600, '99 reg

If I disconnect the battery, will I have to set-up the alarm to recognise the remote or will it be ok?

Annoyingly the alarm is as loud as ever but the bike doesn't have enough power to start it.

I never heard of having to disconnect the battery for charging to save blowing a fuse - what makes you think that's necessary?

I've always just left everything connected when charging the bike.

You don't need to disconnect the battery, all optimates come with cables you leave connected to the battery to make it easy to charge them without having to remove the seat and battery.

pretty much everyone I've asked before has said it needs to be disconnected including my instructor who's charger I've borrowed.

I once got told by a mechanic to turn the lights on whilst the bike is idling because it makes the alternator make more power so the battery charges faster.

I didn't argue only because he jump-started the bike for free.

charger attached and power light is on, but little green charging light doesn't seem to be, but it is daylight out there so could be feint. We'll see how we go.

If it is an Optimate then the charging light is Orange. If it isn't on - it isn't charging. Check the connections first, (are you using the crocodile clips?) and the little plug on the Optimate lead.

it's not an optimate.

It's croc clips wired into the unit, they're clipped onto the terminals and the red power light is lit, I'm not certain if the charging light is lit or not, it's a light green led

I hope the cnut took the time to discuss the virtue of changing powerbands??

I would sound a tiny note of caution in that I suspect that I may have fried the electonomics on my car by connecting a charger to it without disconnecting the battery.

Probably not, but I do tend to err on the side of caution now.

Well, it seems the charger didn't do anything in the couple of hours it was connected up to it so not really sure what to do now.

Tempted to give up and have someone come look at it to get it sorted.

Did the charger get warm? Do you not have a multi meter?
