Ok, so last week, I was covering for another member of staff at our Burton offices, some 40-odd miles commute either way in massive headwinds and gusts.

I've got a restrictor kit in my CBF600 (inlet washers), and along the A50 (the shittiest road surface known to man), I noticed that at about 70 or 80ish, my rev counter was up at 6000rpm for a majority of the time. This was in top gear. I would have expected it to be lower for some reason, but have limited experience...

Is this going to damage the bike or put undue wear and tear on the engine, chain etc.?

Also, what is the normal rpm for the speed in top gear for a four cylinder 600?

Oh and before anyone asks, the restrictors are likely to fall out soon...

Thanks in advance...

no, that is normal.

the washers restrict the airflow, so that there'd less oxygen to burn.

So what you'll find is that the biggest difference is the acceleration. You'll get to the speed you want, it'll just take longer to get there.

remember, bikes tend to rev higher than cars. 6K revs, 70mph, top gear...sounds right to me.

What, you mean they haven't fallen out yet?

Nope not yet. I've ridden my bike throughout the winter for my usual 4.5 mile commute, and with the weather starting to turn warmer, I can certainly say that I've become far more confident and relaxed on the bike...

However, the last weeks longer commute has really wheted my appetite for MOAR SPEED!!!! Very Happy

Seems fine.

What does your bike redline at?

If we take it to be 12000rpm for ease say, that gives us 140mph to 160mph geared top speed, depending on whether that 6000rpm was at 70 or 80.
Doubt it'll hit 160, so wouldn't want it any higher than that.

Shouldn't cause any damage - just like you're riding while not really opening the throttle much.

I currently ride a 125 varadero round the M60ring to get to work, I don't watch the speedo, I watch the rev counter as it sits at the 12000 red line when I'm doing 70ish I'm watching to make sure I don't bump it of the limiter too much.

If you didn't rev a small bike engine then you'd go nowhere.

As previously state, bike engines are designed as high performance engines, designed to be revved.

Because I'm still running in the engine on the zxr (if I could actually get it to run for more than a day at a time that is), that has only been up to 6.5k which is about 85-90.

Mine does 5,500 rpm circa 70 mph in 6th. Pretty normal (and that's restricted)

As said above.

On my ZZR600 I know I'm in top gear when I've got 6k revs at 70 mph
Thumbs Up

80 on my CBR600f is just over 6.5k in 6th.

70 is about 6k.

Yes you're damaging it. The only way to reverse any damage done and prevent future damage is to remove the restrictors immediately.

Failing to do this could cause catastrophic failures such as a twisted subframe or a loose chain.

having restrictors in won't change the gearing - this is what determines what rpm you'll be doing at a certain speed!

I have an 06 restricted (25KW/33bhp) CBF600 and it sits at 6k revs at 75-80 just like yours.

BTW do you have a load of vibrations at 5k before it smooths out at 6-7k?

My bike is pulling 11,000 rpm at 70mph in top........ Wink
Bikes rev.
Restrictors are just like not letting the throttle open all the way.
Means less likely to cause damage, not more.
