when i brake on the cbf and come to a stop, i can hear and feel a knock from the front end and the steering can be quite, unpredictable, light to one side, heavy to the other, is this the head bearings ?

thanks

just to add, could the steering be because the rim has "a flat spot" ?

You should be able to feel something through the bars if the bearing are going. With the bike on the centre stand, turning the bars, do you feel any resistance, or hear any grinding? It's a fairly easy job to check them, just a single nut, although finding a spanner could be problematic Wink

Highly unlikely, unless the flat spot is a big one, and the tyre is bulging.

the tyre is not bulging, the flat spot is a fair size (not massive but not small about 1 1/2 inches), i have the haynes manual so i will see what it says, i will test the steering on the stand in the morning and report back, thankyou for the advice

If you sit on the bike, hold down the front brake and push down hard on the handlebars to compress the forks, do you get a click then?
