Strike rule #1. Strike when it'll cause maximum inconvenience, or strike when the non-union workers can come in extra and earn the greatest amount of money.

Mr Holmes claims the dispute is not over the pay cut, which has been accepted by the drivers.

‘The main reason is the increase in driving time which results in drivers having to drive for four and half hours without a drink or a toilet break. This could have significant health consquences and is unreasonable,

Sounds fair enough. Thumbs Up bus drivers

I agree with what's written in the statement by Eric Holmes that you've quoted but, it's difficult to actually get to the actual truth, as there has been so much mis-information battered around during this dispute (it's been going on for a while) but, I still think it's a bit of a cnuts trick to strike for the whole TT, maybe a few days would have been better, as this has turned public support totally against them over here.

I'll be on my bike as usual anyway so it won't bother me. It's the thousands coming here I feel for. They pay so much and put up with shite weather a lot of the time. If this strike goes ahead, a lot of visitors are going to be screwed.

Taxi drivers should do pretty well though Very Happy

I agree with them tbh, they probably take a flask of tea/coffee just to stay alert when driving and that of course needs to exit in an hour or so.. I am shocked their TT strike didn't make the employer cave in, knowing how much money it makes in the prime time month.

What has "public support" done for them so far?

Pilots go through years of training in order to have a nap while a computer flies the plane.

Why do we value bus drivers less?

I don't know what they are complaining about, every time I done the 36 in Bristol it seemed I always got hit with the 5 1/2 hour part (Bristol to Witheywood 2 round trips), I'd have a 5 minute layover at both ends and the only toilets were at least 5 minutes away. Or different routes in the evenings there were never any toilets open.

Hmm, tough one this. Speaking as a bus driver I see no real problem with doing a 4 1/2 hour turn on the wheel. The company I work for if you need to go and you can get the bus safe then guess what - you go.

Legally stage carriage (a bus operating hail and ride services such as the bus to your local shopping centre) drivers are allowed to work 5 1/2 hours before a break. I've done it a few times and it isn't nice but going on strike over it isn't gonna do anybody any favours.

good on them i say, ive done a stint driving bus size trucks, and its fucking stressfull, and you dont need to worry about picking up people every few minutes, i think bus drivers should get paid far more than they do, and no one should drive more than 2or 3 hours in congested area with out a break, its fatigue that causes accidents

Possibly because buses aren't usually in a position where they could plummet 30,000ft to the ground, killing the crew and hundreds of passengers.

Equally, buses (and their drivers) don't often carry said hundreds of passengers at high speed over the vast oceans which separate continents.

Also, I'd happily wager that there is just a little bit more skill involved in bringing an airliner travelling at over 100mph and weighing several hundred tons safely in to land than there is pulling a bus up at a stop. The consequences of getting it wrong are a little different too: 1) hundreds of people die horribly in a massive fireball, or 2) Granny McGinty has to walk a couple of paces from the bus shelter to the door of the bus but nobody gets their face burnt off.

That might have something to do with it. Possibly.

Thumbs Up

Yehbut <Tefmaths>over 20 million people die in bus and coach crashes every second</Tefmaths>.

Air travel is already super awesome safe, while every single bus driver[*] is a drunken immigrant with a revoked driving license obtained in some backwards rural 3rd world nation.

Also, buses carry children. You monster.

[*] That I'm aware of knowing.

The bus drivers here are paid quite well actually, apparently the average wage for a Manx bus driver is £38,500 per year apparently (this includes overtime).

On the upside to the origonal story though, it seems that some private bus/mini bus companies are organising themselves some services to ferry people to an from various campsites and the local community will be on hand to help folks out too. Thumbs Up

So all being well, nobody should get stranded but, getting around could be a bit more hassle than usual.

If it really is a 40k salary, I agree entirely. You have to earn that sort of money.

Bus drivers are getting 40k! It is an almost entirely non skilled job and they are complaining they don't get enough breaks. Rolling Eyes

Put them on 20k and then let them have a moan.

As I read it, the claim is that they "can" earn "up to" that much, and that's coming from the employers. Careful about buying into the propaganda from either side.

Even if that were true, what are the costs of living like there?
