Going to change my down pipe on the ER6. The outer two nuts seem ok, the inner look as though they'd crumble with finger pressure.

G looked at them yesterday after he'd said to me, usually they aren't that bad, then looked at mine and said they were probably as bad as he's ever seen.

Can I do this myself? I will take a picture later. If so what are the steps. I've got plusgas, I can bathe it in that for a couple days before.

Or is it best to just take to the garage and let them do it, I've got a good one near me who are priced fairly.

I have new fibre washers, new copper washers (wasn't sure which to use), paste and special kawasaki bandage thing for exhaust to downpipe.

Sounds bad but I wouldn't be waiting at all before getting that Plus Gas on them. The sooner the better, a couple of times a day or after every ride.

The studs themselves didn't seem that bad, but the nuts definitely were, or at least that one on the right. One thing you could try is filing it down to make a smaller hexagon.

I'd be tempted to try and get your friend's nut splitter on there.

So if I get the nut off without damaging the thread it should be good then?

Thank god he didn't have his bike out, he could've bored you with his BEEZER! Very Happy

Yea, I reckon if you can get the nut off and clean the thread up a bit it shouldn't be so bad.

You're not really meant to grease such bolts, but if you can get them off ok, after a clean, I'd definitely consider getting longer replacements that cover the entire thread, then sticking some copper grease around there and a little on the end of the nut which touches the exhaust.

Just be careful you don't over-tighten and keep an eye to make sure they don't come loose.

After doing such on other bikes I've found they've come off absolutely fine the next time, despite further winter use.

Right, will lay the bike up for this week and go every night and soak in plus gas, then have a go later in the week or at the weekend.

Hopefully new down pipe will be here long before then.

Would you fit the metal/fibre washers or the solid copper washers?

I went through 4 dremel cutting discs to break the welds and remove the remains of that downpipe in the old exhaust. A real mess it was.
