dad may have some cash coming and mum has said he cant have a bike (65 deaf and not in the best of health also no full licence but can ride 125 )

i may be having some of this cash for a new bike/car as doing car test next year and he wants me to enjoy the money

for some reason im looking at 125cc bsa bikes from the 50s

am i mad or just stupid for thinking of this

i wouldn't say you're mad for looking at em, but then again we don't know how much money you've been given to go play with.

if you feel a 125 would suit you, and a classic bike would be practical enough...why not?

that being said i don't know much about Bsa 125's

For a BSA 125 I assume a bantam...

They're not bad - I had a later 175 version as my only bike a while back - but they are seriously slow in comparison to a 'modern' 125. The 175 had a 'sensible' speed of about 50mph, or 65mph if you really pushed it hard and didn't mind the vibrations. Expect about 40mph out of a 125 if you want it to last at all.

Handling is 'adequate' for 50's and 60's roads - the 125's were hardtail or a plunger rear. You'll have plenty of steering practice avoiding speed bumps and potholes.

I have ridden one or two old? Brits? : AJS Stormer, BSA Bantam, Triumph Tiger90 and a couple of others.
Although I will be the first to admit that my experience is limited, here`s two pennyworth.

My experience of the BSA Bantam was not a good one.
That may? of been down to the fact that it was a bad`un, but it was slow, slow and slow, popped and spluttered a lot and was beaten in all aspects by a Yamaha YB 100.

The Tiger 90 was a decent bike and I liked it (sort of?).
The AJS stormer was a bit of a nutter and noisy and not road legal.

funny old thing is that I was looking at a Royal Enfield Continental and an Ariel Leader just yesterday and thinking how nice they would look in my garage (dreaming just dreaming)

but dad wants to ride it he can only ride a 125 so thats were we are at

only place i will ride will be a mile to the local pub for classic car/bike night

or to dads for him to fuck off out for a bit n it whilst i walk his manic dog

My point stands; for a lot less money, easier availability of parts and the like you could get a similar spec modern bike that's probably a good bit better spec.

So if the bike is for riding, go for the modern bike still, I say .

You can't beat a good classic with a bit of character, sunny Sunday afternoon slow bumble through the countryside dreaming of times gone by.

Of course beyond a sunny Sunday and cleaning the thing there isn't much more to do and G does talk sense from a value point of view.

But can you pop down your local bike shop on a Saturday afternoon when you've found you really need some new bearings and get a set?

Ok, I usually go for ordering online, but in Reading at least I made a point of using the local bike shop occasionally because they were sound blokes and it's certainly useful to be able to pop in on a Saturday afternoon and know they were pretty likely to have the part.

As for tuning - if you're going to get it up to the spec of a fairly low spec modern bike (say an NSR125 which you can pick up from £700 in decentish nick), I supsect you're going to be spending a lot of money, even if you don't get near the power still.
