Problems with insurance on 600cc bike.

Hiya Peeps,

I have a problem that I am hoping someone can solve for me. The riding school I am currently with and the other 2 in my area all use a Suzuki Bandit (600cc) for the A tests. Trouble is it is physically way too big for me to ride (I must have short arms ). My husband has a Yam XJ600N that is perfect but I cant get insurance to ride it as an extra on his policy.

All the companies we have contacted have said I need to be the sole rider before they will insure me but my husband uses the bike to get to work every day with no other means of transport.

My CBT runs out in Sept 2013 and I was hoping to have passed my MOD 1 and 2 by then. Can anyone suggest a solution please. I'm getting desparate

Look at riding schools slightly further a field ? One with a suitable bike ? May be a little pain to get there but it's not for long at least

Alternatively ask the local schools if they can help you out, I'd be surprised if they didn't have access to more bikes through friends and business around, they may be able to temporarily borrow a bike for you to use through them, if that makes sense?

I'm confused, if you don't have a license of cource you can't ride it?

Mine cost me £300 to insure for the year TPO, it's hardly much for your own policy
Oh I see, to do your test on.... Ring the riding school, explain this, they may be able to insure you on it with their instructor insurance, but your hubby will have to drive it to the centre for you, you can pillion

If I was you I would probably take out another policy in hubby's name but with you as a named rider. You aren't being dishonest about who is using thw bike the most, although you may not be able to transfer NCB as it is in use on another policy, even though it's the same bike. Hopefully you can find someone who isn't a bitch about insuring you as a learner.

Do you have a car?
Do you have an insurance policy on it?
Would that insurance policy have third party extension for you to cover "Any Other Vehicle with Owners Concent?"

Hubby says he is gonna renew his insurance a month early and include me on it. If I dont pass before September its another £90 for a CBT anyways so we'll have to see. Thanks for the help guys

As Rogerborg said theres nothing stopping you from having 2 insurance policies covering the one vehicle. Most commercially hired vehicles have two policies covering them, one from the owning company and a second more detailed policy for the hirers company. It just creates slight glitches on the system.

A cheap 3rd party only policy should do you fine for learning if you cant convince the school to put your bike onto their policy.
