Second hand but professionally maintained . It is 500cc and designed to run on methanol. It is a speedway motor.

I'm not sure if I'm disappointed. Confused
I expected it to be a 350 two-smoke twin... after your LC thread....
But... what do those OHC Speedway engine's pump these days? About 70bhp? And I bet it weights about as much as a Smiler-trap!
So what's the plan?
It going to gain a gear-box?
Mono-cock sheet ali frame?
Who was it that made them for grass-track? Was it Hagon?

How far over can you cant them? They're splash lubed aren't they?
Will they run as a lay-down, or has it got to be a sloper?

Hi Mike.
I was toying with a smoker twin but my heart will always be with a big four stroke single. I want a bike that will go through the standing 1/4 very quickly and these motors are well suited to do that. It will be matched up to a gearbox and I will build a frame to suit.
Expect an epic in Show and Tell.

He is teaching by example. You're just not learning by your mistakes.

Don't buy Jawa twins.

Dedicated straight-liner, or another sprint bike?

You going to go for a classic unit box, like a Sturmey or Burman, or get creative & mill crank chambers off something more contemporary?

Lay-down or conventional? Rigid or sprung? Steel? Ali? Carbon? Tubular or sheet?
You're getting me all intrigued!

This one will be a dedicated straightliner in a laydown frame. I see no point in suspension as all it will do is slow me down with its weight so it will be in a rigid frame. My present concept is to have the box and motor in a plate aluminium alloy monocoque assembly suspended in a lightweight steel tubular frame with the front member and steering head from a Greeves. Gearbox will in all probability be Burman as I am used to working on them but could be BSA or Norton. Forks will be lightweight such as a BSA Bantam and wheels built on to Honda Chicken Chaser hubs.
It works in my head.

I fully appreciate you prefer the path less often trodden, but wouldn't it be easier to start with a grass/long track frame, which is already set up for the engine and gearbox, if only to act as a datum?

I have considered that but I like a challenge. The frame will not be the same as a Grasstracker as there is no need for it to corner.

I was just working on the basis that, whenever I've built anything unusual, it's easier to start with something rather than nothing, even if the end result bears no resemblance to the original.

A longtrack frame would give you the basic dimensions, then you can strengthen, kick out the headstock and extend the rear triangle to your heart's content.

You can't beat the rush of opening up a big single, I will add mount points for wheelie bars on the rear loop as I doubt I will be able to keep it down any other way.

Having seen your other bike, I don't believe that for a second.

This project does interest me greatly; as a speedway fan, I know the bikes and their engines are designed with a total singularity of purpose, so it's good to see this motor being used for something else.

Do you know, is it a short or long stroke lump?
