Morning all,

I just returned from an early hours hoon and noticed this weird shiny thing sticking out of my tyre:

https://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u587/mjs1066/20130605_043506_zps3270f346.jpg

Gave it a gentle tug with a pair of pliers (ooh-er Missus!) and sure enough it's a motherfucking nail. Just in time for a sunny day off work I might add. Fuck my life.

https://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u587/mjs1066/20130605_044129_zps6c1b0fd3.jpg

Up to now I've been lucky and never had to deal with a puncture before so need to know what my options are. There's a good 2 to 3,000 mile of tread left on the tyre I reckon, so if a repair is possible how much is it likely to set me back and where should I go to get one? Or should I just cough up £100 for a new tyre?

Any advice welcome!

This. Anywhere else on the bottom of the tyre then it can be plugged. But thats a bit close to the side for my liking too.

I don't think you'll find anywhere that'll do a proper plug that close to the sidewall, so you'd have to do it yourself. As its not a new tyre i'd just get a new one.

I think even Paddy would baulk at plugging that. Wink

Too close to the sidewall for comfort, I'm afraid. New tyre time.

leave it in there for now. I had a nail in the centre of my GSXR tyre for about a year, didn't leak.

That's very bad advice. There's a massive difference in construction between the centre of a tyre and the sidewall edge - the OP would be risking an eventual blow out. Leaving an object that size in the centre isn't a smart thing to do either.

Meh, I'd put a self tapping screw in it for a temporary fix.

Or plug it myself.

Nah, looks fine to me, I've seen someone plug so close its patch on the inside was overlapping the sidewall.

If it was close to the limit or ~2mm I'd just swap it.

Plug it and ride on regardless.
The tyre's on it's last legs anyway so if you are not pushing it to it's physical limits it'll be fine.

I've not bothered pluging before and skooted a bottle of Slime from Halfords into a nailed tyre. Ran it to the wire then. Smile
