Well tis the season to under cook cook sausages, so decided to build my own ghetto bbq

cut a drum in half with petrol whizzer - note to self dont wear shorts when cutting drum = hairy legs an sparks dont mix

set a big fire to burn all "bad" stuff away

i used some oak for the handle as i was thinking it wont burn (it does) being a hard wood

i painted the outside using VHT paint from Halfords, one tiny tin of brush on stuff covered it

and finished....

it works a treat, i fancy making a smoker out of a calorgas bottle next

A saffer batchelor's first braai is always a half drum. I gave up on those a while ago In digs we used it every night.

They you must be careful of the gases inside and burn out. The problem is they rust out quick. The heat tends to weaken the bottom. I hope you drilled a few holes in the bottom to drain moisture and retard the rusting.

As far as paint, as I use that spray on heat resistant stuff.

You need to get your garden kaffir to pick the weeds out between the paving and to do your edges. And after he is done, he needs to treat to wooden fence. fark it bru, when the neighbours look over after they smell the braai, you don't want them thinking some poor white trash lives there lol.

it only took about 3 hours to make, yeah i did drill holes in the bottom of the barrel to let water an crap drain

i have also put in a grill that all the coal sits on, as i thought the heat would burn through the drum - plus it lets air underneath

Done a few of these over the years for various people.
You can make it into a smoker. Just make the chimneys on each side but make sure you can unbolt it and put a blanking plate on.

As for purging.
The easiest and safest way is to put the opening over a car exhaust and leave it running for 10minutes or whilst you are cutting the carbon monoxide is dangerous itself, so best done outside but atleast it won't go bang. This way also works petrol tanks. Otherwise they shoot off like a rocket across the workshop.
