Hi there what's this process like? Just send off the log book and that's it? I've got a spare frame I would like to swap over since current frame is damaged. If I do not register the change the numbers what's the worst that. Could happen?

You get the bike confiscated & crushed, as 'Other than described on the registration doculemt'

You get prosecuted for rifing without insurance, as bike insured is not the one you are riding.

And whetever else they can chuck at you.

Registration goes with the Frame Number. You CANNOT change it without re-registering the bike, and submitting it for VOSA inspection.

UNLESS the replacement frame is brand-new, like for like replacement, pre-stamped by supplier with the old frame's VIN number on surrender to them of that frame for approved disposal.

You cant just send off the log book with VIN number you have on it changed to another one.

You would have to get log-book that goes with the frame you wish to use and use & change details on that to the engine number and colour scheme of bits you fit.... and you may yet STILL get hauled in for a VOSA inspection if they think its in any way dodgy.

Oh, and I believe they check the VIN number against records when you take the thing for an MOT.

The frame doesn't have a number plate can I check it's not stolen before I apply for a q plate or something? Because if it's stolen I'll have to cut it up and get rid Please note I haven't just gone and stole a bike.

I seem to remember there being someone on the forum who can do vehicle checks based on just the frame number. From that you would have the reg number and can find out if it is still road legal.

Not sure who it was though...

For clarity, what do you mean by 'Number-Plate'?

A 'Registration Index'? the letters and numbers displayed on the plate on the mudguard, and on the V5 Registration form, issued by the DVLA?

Or

A VIN 'plate' or Vehicle Identification Number, stamped up with the 'Product' seriel number and type approval codes and essential specs, by the vehicle manufacturer?

What you SHOULD have is the frame'e seriel number on the head-stock. This is normally the same as the product VIN number on teh VIN plate, and is the 'key' to the bike's identity.

You can apply for the Registration against the Frame No or VIN No. but could be that the bike was stolen or scrapped, for you to not have it already.

If scrapped? Cant be put back on the road.

If stolen? Not yours to fit to another motorbike.... and better to have an insurance co of previouse owner reclaim the frame; rather than whole bike you build around it.

Before you were even breathing featal fluids, Rob; the rules were different & bikes could be registered against either engine or frame number. That bike you reffer to was registered against the engine number, and 5-speed, points ignition motor was correct for that age of bike, while all number's matched the V5. As you may well recall in the build blog where it was explained. Rules, changed, at a time when the most advanced wheeled vehicle you commanded, had handles and was pushed by your mum.

Now that is actually quite a miss-leading statement.

Vehicles could only if I remember correctly be registered against the engine number if the frame wasn't stamped with a number. Even then the registration resided with the chassis of the vehicle and not the engine.

I would actually bet money it wasn't. Chassis numbers have been in use since at east the early 1950's and Yamaha's at least as far back as 1970 (and I would bet further back) used chassis numbers. For instance the RT1 of 1970/71 had the chassis prefix of RT1.

So the only way for your motorcycle to have been registered on the engine would be if there was no chassis no. recorded on registration yet it did have one OR if at a later date the chassis and no. was changed which used to be a trivial matter of returning the log book with the new number entered in the box.

I'm afraid that as in your previous thread concerning this bike you acknowledge that whatever happened was for fraudulent reasons this bike is without a shadow of a doubt a ringer.

The only motorcycles that I have heard of being registered by engine number alone are pre-1970 Harley Davidsons. Prior to 1970 Harleys were produced with an engine number only and no VIN number was stamped on the frame.
Your statement may of course be correct Mike, but I've never come across this before.

Harleys were the only bike I could think of as well for the 70's time frame as well as many of the later ones have two frame numbers.

So will it be admitted that the bike is a ringer or not?
