I was riding to work this morning and i had to sort my zip on my jacket so i let go of the handle bars and they started to wobble like crazy, it stopped immediately, when i put my hands back on.

I know its not normal so what could be cause? Something worn, need replacing ?

Cheers Brendan

Worn head bearings?
Lost bar-end weight?
Soft tyre?

Those would be the first three suspects..

What Nexus said, also possibly wheel bearings or wheel weights.

I had it before where just changing the front tyre cured the wobble.

Have your forks been leaking recently, have you dropped your bike?

All 3 listed by Nexus are fine on my bike and it wobbles like an epileptic at a rave. Laughing Not saying it can't be those though Thumbs Up

A squared-off rear tyre, or a topbox used to do it to my hornet 600.

Just to add, I do this all the time and it doesn't wobble at all Smile also great fun getting it round corners without touching the bars

It didn't do it until I fitted a top box. So I'm going to check. Without the box fitted.

And the check everything else. Also I'm of on a 400 mile trip what should I check before setting off?

Steering head bearings. Get the front wheel off the ground somehow and turn your handlebars left to right. See if they have a bit they "stick" on.

That's what caused it on my old bike.

Oil checked, Lights, brakes all work.

I have gone for a quick ride to asda to get my lunch and its has stopped, since i took the top box off, its a 58 liter to box so it pretty wide.

My top box causes this on the CB at 40mph (fine below 35 or above 45-50).

There is a tiny bit of wobble without the box. With it, you can't let go at 40.

Same with my Varadero 1000,although my rear shock is knackered now and this too causes a head wobble.

Most likely wheel imbalance.

Mine used to wobble like mad until I removed the wheel weights and put DynaBeads in the tyres. Now it tracks like it's on rails when I ride no-handed.

Riding no-handed down Slack Hill with nothing but a dab of back brake is hilarious.

I think you'll find it's most likely the top box, since it's stopped doing it since the OP removed it. Wink

Of all the things above, it is most likely tyre wear, or low PSI.

Tyres, my 97 xj600 does the same as does a few other people's, is normal, trick is to keep your hands on the bar when decellerating Wink

Although I do enjoy braking to a halt no handed and grabbing the clutch at the last second Razz
Check tyre pressures.

A worn, but not necessarily illegal BT45 on the front will cause this kind of behaviour.
